one of my fork and spoon operators just made 2900 from two truckloads of recycled plastic without having to take possession of it.

I just found out that if I moved to Australia I could be getting paid $55k (AUS) to set up Linux servers and configure networks. I think I may need to move.

I work at UPS and also Burgerville. Neither job is very cool.

I had no idea Burgerville was a real place. I thought it was just a generic sounding fast food name to obscure the specific franchise people are talking about or something.
Those asparagus spears actually look quite yummy. How's the dip?

I used to work at a rather interesting place (although probably only interesting to me haha). It's called NIAR. The National Institute for Aviation Research. I was a student technician and I started out making strain gauges. For those that don't know, strain is change in length/ length. We used them to see at what points the materials would warp and develop instabilities or eventually break. Also, where the strain was being concentrated and how it affected at the microscopic level the structure of the composites and alloys. Then I moved over to QC (Quality control) which sounds boring, but actually I had a much better time over there. I would dimension the incoming materials and see if they met tolerance (sometimes being a thousandth of a cm). Also, I would occasionally have to use a computerized microscope to examine for flaws. All that sounds complicated but in reality I was an over glorified assembly line worker then an over glorified man that walks around with a $300 measuring stick. Haha.
We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further!

How much did that pay, if you don't mind me asking?

$8.50/hr, but basically guaranteed 30 hours per week and 20 during the school year. It's not like that now, because of the economy. Oh well. I'm hoping I might be able to get rehired. It kinda sucks though because my boss said he would hire me back, but now that I'm eligible for a student tech position again, he doesn't work there.

$8.50/hr is crazy. What's your minimum wage there?

Really?
I made more money working at Starbucks than that.

Where at though? I used to get paid $2.50/hr + tips at Empire China.

No I mean it's crazy low. Minimum wage here converts to $10/hr in your funny monies.

I think you're being a little wide-eyed and naive about the "good ol' days." When it comes to companies and businesses hiring workers, there have been severe problems in our history regarding payment and humane treatment.
But getting to what this topic is about. I just got a student position working at the university archives as a curator. I'll mostly be working with the photo collections but I will help with a variety of projects when needed. Does not pay super great, but it is a student job and I enjoy the work. My job at the bookstore paid more, but that job killed me and I hated doing it. I was an intern at the archives last semester and I always looked forward to it.
Not "conspiracies". Conspiracy. Singular.
