Would anyone want to use something like this to improve performance and exploration?

The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.

Here's the thing. Philosophically I should be all about Minecraft. I love Legos, I love building, I love sharing, I love exploring, and I have no real hobbies. But I just can't get into it. I don't know why. I'd like to, I see all of these things people build and think, "Man, I'd love to just build a huge underground lair or something." But whenever I try to play, I just explore and get bored rather quickly. It's just not fun for me, and I don't know why.

Do you play with other people/with Mobs on?

Because those two things add a lot to the game.

Server is up at 81.149.57.143:25565

No mods on yet, I'l worry about that stuff tomorrow. Turns out my Linux box only has 2gb memory so I'm not sure what performance will be like. Check it out if you like.

If we use a pre-generated world it could help with the ram consumption. I've been playing with some programs to do this, and am about 40% in to what looks like a very interesting world (not much snow, a lot of green, several villages for some reason, and large biomes). I don't have any special plug ins installed to do really crazy things, but I like the way this looks so far. I can upload a map when it's done if you want to take a look at it. Also, I am really looking forward to playing now.

It runs fine locally, but that was just with one player.

What other benefits are there with pre-generated worlds? I can update using MLG at any point so I'll probably give that a go tomorrow. And because it updates existing maps it means I don't lose the lovely 4x4 house I just built :)

oh, and I thoroughly recommend people look at installing the HD texture pack Sphax - it gives everything a really tasteful cel-shaded look.

After 5 minutes playing I already want to make more minecart tracks.

Just for kicks, here is a day and night map of the world I generated. This is a very large map.

http://monkeypro.net/vp/world2/

Even with the massive amount of ocean on the map, that's still a lot of playable area. And, there's very little snow, which makes me happy. (I get so bored with snowy biomes for some reason...).

Looks pretty nice actually. If you like I wouldn't mind getting the map data off you and using it for the server. I didn't like the snow where we started, and your map has lots of villages for me to connect with minecart track.

Ok, it's uploading to http://monkeypro.net/vp/world2.7z

Won't work yet, but it will probably be ready to download when you wake up in the morning.

And in server properties, be sure to include:

level-type=LARGEBIOMES

level-seed=8860112258026738394

Server should be back up and it has the new map loaded.

I also tried to get a dynamic map going, but I must have messed up one of the steps - I'll take another look at it tomorrow.

I've died twice already. Huzzah! You may or may not find random goodies strewn throughout the map. :)

Old flash signature has been revived for nostalgic purposes. Too bad RpgWizard hasn't been revived. :\

Yeah, there's no trees anywhere near the spawn, which makes it kind of tough.

I explored a bit in single player, and yeah, the lack of trees is interesting. It doesn't take long to get to the large forest north-west of the spawn, but I imagine it's a bit tougher with monsters about. (I was playing peaceful). Maybe later today I'll have to get on and help get some saplings taken to the spawn.

Yup, I was thinking of doing the same. I'm going to build a farm somewhere near spawn too so new players have quick access to food.

I've made some progress with the dynamic map. It now shows map data, but only for areas visited for players - not the whole map. So I guess that's a start. Let me know if it's working for you guys.

How is the performance of the server in general? I'm going to look into purchasing some server space soon.

The problem I kept having was that after about a "day" of playing, it would disconnect me and give me some sort of java memory error message. I'll have to look at it again next time I play.

Not sure if this prob is on my side or server side.

Yeah, sounds like the server is running out of memories. Kinda sucks, I guess I should move to a proper server sooner rather than later.

There is a really cool crater/giant hole due north of the spawn.

While playing a bit of where's waldo on the map, I've noticed some things:

at least 11 npc villages
at least 5 jungle temples
at least 7 desert temple, including one desert temple that spawned in an npc village
and one thing that i think is a stronghold, but might just be an oddly shaped village.

And in the great hunt for trees, the trees are winning:

i like this map so far. Though knowing where some things are takes some of the mystery out, it still feels big enough that it's exciting to want to go exploring everything.
