Server difficulty is set to normal. I'm going to drop it down to easy when I next restart the server. If the monsters are still annoying I'll set it to peaceful. After a while I want to re-introduce the monsters though, I think they do add an extra-dimension as far as providing a challenging obstacle to your creative ambitions. They are awfully annoying when you're just getting started though.

Were the bugs you encountered persistent or just occasional? Did you manage to destroy and collect blocks or did that just not work at all?

The monsters were no issue. In fact I didn't encounter any. I logged on during the day.

The bugs were consistent closer to to spawn point, less so away from it. It seemed to be selective. I was, eventually, able to both destroy and collect blocks. I made a small lack-luster shelter near the spawn point.

Huzzah! A successful session.

I already have big plans for this new map.

Woke up this morning and saw that Toyz has been having some problems connecting. Not sure if this is unique to his connection or whether the underlying cause is somehow at my end so if anyone else has trouble staying connected for more than 5 minutes let me know and I'll look into it.

The main bug I'm going to look into today is blocks occasionally refusing to be destroyed/collected.

UPDATE: The problem can be caused by two things: a) attempting to mine blocks too near the spawn point that are protected and b) mining/laying blocks when standing in flowing water or being underwater.

At the moment there is no official fix for the problem but there are some custom scripts I can try running that reportedly reduce the frequency of this bug. I'll look into getting hold of the scripts when I get home tonight.

I just tested the server (remotely) and it's working fine for me. Not sure why it'd appear offline for you. I don't have direct access to the server from here so I can't check the logs to verify what errors were encountered. In the future I'll make the logs that it produces visible online to prevent such inconveniences. For now there's not much I can do until I get home.

Try logging in again, perhaps it was just a temporary hiccup. If it still doesn't work try pinging the server to see if it's a problem with the server software or the connection.

UPDATE: I've changed the server settings so that it no longer verifies accounts with minecraft.net. This means that if there's anyone here that doesn't have the moneys to buy an account they should still be able to log in provided they have a copy of the most recent minecraft client.

My suspicions would be a port forwarding problem. If you're specifying port 25565 try just typing monkeycraft.dyndns.tv. Did you try pinging the server? That'll help determine whether the problem is the internet connection to the server or whether the server itself is encountering an error with your login.

EDIT: I'm sure you know how to do this but just in case...

On Windows:

Go to the Start menu > type "cmd" into run > type "ping monkeycraft.dyndns.tv" in the command prompt.

On Linux:

Open a terminal (ctrl+alt+t) > type "ping monkeycraft.dyndns.tv"

On Mac:

Go out and buy a real computer > install Linux > follow the steps provided for Linux machines.

If you look at the cartograph of the current game world, you may wonder what the hell myproblem is. I kinda... went north, and kept going north...for a long time. I finally settled on a spot that I could do some cool things with. Hooray!

Exploration is good. Over time the environment may begin to get cluttered by the more ambitious projects so starting such projects well away from the spawn point is going to save a lot of headaches.

Also, I tried to generate a map of the known world last night but for some reason I couldn't get cartograph to run on Linux. I'll give it another go tonight and upload any results I have. It'd be good to have a map with the man-made landmarks labelled. That way we can get an idea of who is building what where so we don't accidentally build on top of each other.

Spent an hour or so laying out the design for my mine this morning. Satisfying work even if I did have to change my plans several times.

I think playing on normal will be difficult. Our crappy connection plus the distance creates some messy lag when dealing with mobs.

Lag and putting things in chests don't mix. I appear to have been doing it so fast that I lost some items to some weird chest void in the sky. I don't remember them being anything important, though.

My Beanstalk story so far.

Traveling north for what must have been forever in game time, I finally settled on an unassuming island. I'm not sure what drew me to it, except that maybe I just tired of walking. Also, the body of water a little further north seems promising.

As JC Denton, I make a very crude shelter and set up some essentials.

After chopping wood for a day or two, I discover I need more coal. I could have stolen more torches from the crate at the spawn point, but that's not very sporty of me. Time to explore. After a couple of rather empty caves with just a bit of resources, I find something promising.

Initial scouting and torch placement prove successful. Other than the un-locatable spider I keep hearing, all seems well. Until I find something of an upward stair, which leads me to these fellers.

Yep. Time to place a few torches, take what I've gathered back to safety, and come back better equipped... and with less to lose. There is no chance I'm going to make it from spawn to this place in 15 minutes. Dying is not an option.

Just spent an hour on my mine only to suffer a creeper rampage and destroy a lot of my work. This is something I'll need to address tonight.

I wish there was a way of simply turning off creepers. I don't mind skeletons, zombies and spiders but when a creeper blows up something you've been working on it's really frustrating.

As a compromise I'll look into taking the difficulty down to easy (not peaceful as that would prevent us from being able to collect valuable resources such as thread and gunpowder). I'll also look into installing a server mod that enables commands such as /sethome which allows players to specify where they respawn. That should be invaluable in helping us explore beyond the spawn area.

UPDATE: (server is currently down while I try to implement some of these ideas).

UPDATE 2: New server software is installed and commands should now be working. As far as difficulty goes I've read conflicting things. There doesn't seem to be a server-side setting for difficulty, it's determined by what setting the players have got the difficulty on (setting itself to the highest difficulty it detects). If we all set the difficulty in our clients to easy it should improve. Though I hear a lot of talk about this being severely bugged and not working properly yet.

If it helps I can set mine to easy. I didn't read this post until now, and in the game I was completely oblivious as to why you cared what my difficulty was. now I know.

Overall the server is running fairly well.

There are no words to express how awesome playing Minecraft as JC Denton makes you.

Also I still can't get Cartograph working properly. I might have to try something extreme like booting up Windows and running it from there.
