Apologies if the server was laggy today, I accidentally left Bittorrent running. Downloaded myself Freespace 2 :)

Today I went exploring around Vicious' territory and boy is there a fun tunnel in those parts. It's got lava and underground waterfalls and twists and turns and everything. Good stuff!

I do seem to have picked an interesting corner of the world.

I'm nearly ready to start building... just got a little more leveling to do. Yes... Yes...

I'm glad you're getting to that stage. It's where I'm kind of at. Unlike you and Spaz I haven't really explored any tunnels and come across oodles of fun resources like gold and diamond. I barely even have any Iron because I'm mining into a mountain that's so high.

I'll start mining further down over the next few days. My brother is back in town for Christmas so I'm going to try and convince him to try Minecraft and our population will have increased to 4!

I have a couple of other friends too who would be interested but they're reluctant to pay for internet (because they're N00BS!). Hopefully I can convince them and we'll have a population of 6.

From there the next step is global domination.

Server is expected to be down at some point as I'm going to have to boot up Windows to play some Settlers 2 with my brother.

I'll try to restore the server before you guys are likely to log in so hopefully you should still be able to play tonight.

I'll try to set it up so that when the server is down my avatar on this forum isn't displayed. And when the server is up it will be. I haven't implemented this yet so don't assume that cause you can see my avatar that it's working just yet.

Server is back up. It's running on a different machine though so email me if there's any problems and I should be able to address them pretty quickly.

Man, I really wish I could get involved with this. But I probably won't be able to afford my computer until Summer break at the earliest. I expect fantastic and jaw-dropping architecture when I finally do join the server. :<3:

i just wanted to share with you guys some of my current work in progress happening right on on Bean's server. Tentatively titled, "The Library."

Exterior
Attached File  2010_12_19_12.02.12.png   750.99K   10 downloads

Some shelves in progress
Attached File  2010_12_19_12.01.28.png   244.23K   6 downloads

Some other shelves in progress
Attached File  2010_12_19_12.01.40.png   372.25K   6 downloads

The exterior at night, opposite side of the building
Attached File  2010_12_19_115532.jpg   526.48K   5 downloads

The "secret" garden on top of the building. From here, you can see the bottom of the floating island. It's swell.

One of my long term goals was to establish a library. I'm starting to think it might be more in the spirit of the community to donate the books in my collection to your library. When I next log in I'll travel to what you've constructed and assess the possibility of building my own wing or perhaps just filling up existing empty space.

I'll establish a warp point for the library and any construction I undertake will try to adhere to the aesthetic sensibilities that you have already established. Because it already looks phat, innit.

Good work!

On a related note the university library where I spend most of my time has already been a big architectural influence on my minecraft projects. I was wondering if there were any real world locations that had similarly inspired your creations?

One last thing:

Notch is apparently working on making fully functional books that can be written in. I think it would be great if our library was actually a working collection of knowledge. Eventually I envisage being able use the library to store heroic journals of our Minecraft feats and to provide access to maps of the land.

For now there is this excellent mod that enables this kind of functionality and I'm seriously considering installing it on the server.

Thoughts?

EDIT: The more I think about this idea the more I can imagine myself spending all my time developing an intricate and imaginative lore that details the origins of the server and its users within a fantasy/minecraft style language.

Having that sort of functionality would be awesome. And extra awesome.

No, I nothing I can think of has inspired me. Maybe unconsciously. Frankly, as far as architecture goes, I live in blandsville U.S.A., and sadly don't travel often enough. Mostly my ideas come from expanding on things that I see other people make, then making mistakes with my own buildings, and improvising solutions. I said my library was a "work in progress," but it will likely always be just that. I'm kinda weird like that...

I don't think I have had anything inspire me just yet. I always imagined actually making Atlantis from SGA, but have no actual plans to do so.

EDIT: The more I think about this idea the more I can imagine myself spending all my time developing an intricate and imaginative lore that details the origins of the server and its users within a fantasy/minecraft style language.

I would really enjoy this. On Ivince's server I have already considered such a thing.
