I don't understand it at all.

I have yet to play it, and I have heard it's great...I just...do not understand.

I don't understand it at all.

I have yet to play it, and I have heard it's great...I just...do not understand.

It's a hard one to explain, especially as it's so early on in the game's development. On top of that multiplayer and singleplayer are very different.

Multiplayer is like a virtual lego-set. But the first person perspective really makes it feel great to construct enormous, ambitious structures. And I must admit that when I first found out about Minecraft it seemed too open-ended and I had a hard time imagining anything I'd want to build. But once you're actually in these beautiful blocky world you get immersed in the games internal logic and you want to discover more about it, so you mess around with it and try different things, always not sure if what you envision is entirely possible. And then the final pay-off is the immense satisfaction when you can show people what you've been working on and know that because of the freedom the game provides nobody else will have constructed quite the same thing.

The single-player is much more heavily orientated around the RPG elements (health and monsters are broken in multiplayer on the current build). Just like any RPG the persuit of better loot boils down to a grind but it by far the most enjoyable, liberating grind in any game ever. The entire game's narrative is driven by the simple day/night mechanic. In day time you are free to roam the surface and collect wood and other resources, but at night monsters spawn in the darkness so you have to tunnel underground for safety. And then this mechanic is pushed further as monsters spawn anywhere that is dark, so you need to mine deeper to extract coal to light your cave. And as you find your economic needs grow you discover more of the environment which opens up greater possibilities of expansion which in turn requires more resources. It's a grind, but it's a sublime grind in a world with truly emergent gameplay where you control the pace and intensity of the grind simply through how adventurous and creative your feeling.

Crazy incoherent ramble, I know, but there really isn't any other game like it and I think people everywhere are having a similar problem in explaining what's so addictive about this game.

Also the much anticipated Halloween patch is imminent so now would be as good a time as any to check this game out.

I am going to buy this game the instant I buy my new desktop PC, whenever that is. It looks like soooooo much fun now that I've looked into it. I would all be for doing some forum thing with it.

And I'll be honest, I'd always heard the name floating around, but I thought it was a cheap clone of Starcraft because of the name so always ignored it. Dear GOD was I wrong.

Wow, I come here just to post this :3 .

Seriously impressive work. How long did it take you? Right now I can only afford to play Minecraft for 4 or 5 hours a week so I can only dream of undertaking projects like that.

As far as I know this game is written in Java. It's not the best platform but it does enable it to be played within your browser.

No, I don't. It always has the stupid updater running in the background, and even when I disable it, it just finds a way to re-activate it. (Generally, I get rid of programs that have updaters that run in the background). Also, my experience with java is that it tends to be buggy and not my friend.

For some reason I was under the impression that the alpha was currently free, and that once it hit beta you had to pay. So I only just now bought the full game...

Last night was the first time I spent any real time with the game. I spent about four hours in the classic mode building my own secret hole in a mountain side with hidden passages and tunnels deep underground... and a chimney to the sky (so that I could find it easier). I was grinning like a child the entire time.

This morning I paid for the full game. I don't know if the rest of you cool cats are paying for it, but all of the torrents I found turned out to be viruses. I didn't mind paying for it (especially since I had some money in my paypal account that I guess I forgot about). I'm looking forward to getting in to the survival mode. Though, I imagine I'll probably be spending most of my time building stuff in the classic mode.

BEAN! We need to find some time to log some multiplayer hours in to this thing.
