Heather and I would be willing to throw in some money toward that, too, especially if it improves the minecraftiness. I'm worried about people losing interest, too, bean. However, I think the minecraft development process what is keeping people interested in the game for so long. Hopefully that will continue for a while.

BLU, I do not have a current enough back up, sadly. The last one I made was before I put the new hmod on the server, but even if I used that, quite a lot of progress would be lost. I tried to do a back up a few days ago, but it must have been after the recent server issues, because I couldn't connect. I will try again later when I'm on my desktop.

Maybe game slot renting would be an idea?

site: http://www.hostedgam...erver/minecraft

$1,95 per slot, with free mumble slot per slot of minecraft so we can communicate ingame.
also comes with free small webhosting so we could build a minecraft site and link minecraft html related things to it, like an weekly updated world map.

One of you more web/hosting/minecraft savvy people could mail them for more specifics regarding RAM/HDD/ACCESS PROTOCOLS/ETC and other options like domain forwarding/A records.

if this works out, it will be cheaper then to move to a (dedicated)VPS host (I think, did not look around for it)

I am tempted to start something like that here on monkeypro. Of course, we would all have to go on trust, but I think that's ok. Just upload the save file when we've died, and pass it on to the next player.

What difficulty would it be played on? If it's on peaceful a player could play for ever and ever really.

Heather and I were discussing this earlier, and it would have to be played on Normal. That was it's accessible for most players, while still presenting life-threatening challenges. We also mentioned that people need to be ready for the possibility of getting gypped. That is, if you die "too soon" for whatever reason. In that instance, you would still need to move the world along to the next player, to keep things consistent. One way to keep all players involved, though, would be if we rotated through our list (since we would likely have a relatively small list).

For what it's worth, the sadpancake.com server should be running again (although there were a lot of exceptions on startup...). I'll try to perform a backup of all the HDDs tomorrow.

EDIT: Lies, apparently the entire file system was forced into read-only (which probably explains the exceptions), so uhhh ... there's that.

EDIT++: A quick fsck later and we're read/write again ... everything should be going again. I guess it's working since it wouldn't let me connect for having an outdated client.

I'm not sure. I woke up this morning to find it was offline again. Fortunately it seems like if you just keep turning it on then at some point it'll finally boot properly... at least for now. Once somebody gets home I'll call and try to get it going again...
