Anyway, the 75th anniversary edition of Monopoly looks a bit different than usual.

I'm a huge fan of Scrabble and Monopoly. In fact, my family holds an interfamily scrabble tournament annually, so I get to indulge in my interest every new year's eve by playing multiple games. I haven't found anyone that wants to play monopoly yet though :/

Did you know that Monopoly was originally round?

Because I got two new games from my brother and sister-in-law called Ys and In the Shadow of the Emperor, respectively an early graduation present and an early birthday present. =D
I tried out Ys with some friends today, and we played it twice. It's a game of mercantile trickery that involves a fair amount of bluffing. It would take too long to describe the entire game here, but in short you're collecting gems of different colors and trying to influence their market value for gold/points. You place "brokers" (with different numbers that represent their prowess) throughout the city of Ys and try to control the different districts; half of everyone's brokers are played face down, creating much anxiety, strife, and fist-shaking when they're revealed at the end of a round, at least for us when we played. I won the first game and tied for second in our second game.
I haven't played In the Shadow of the Emperor yet, but I've gone through the manual and got the gist of the rules. This one is more a game of political trickery. There are seven electorates, and players try to control them in order to get the votes they need to unseat the emperor and put their own candidate on the throne (or to stay in power if they already control the throne). Surprisingly, becoming the emperor doesn't win you the game, but it does make it easier to get more victory points.
This game looks to be one of the most complicated in my collection (which sounds fun to me~), so I'll just tell about one of the more amusing aspects. Each player can have a number of barons within the electorates; these barons can have children (if they're married), grow old, and eventually die off. Circumstances will determine whether they have a son or a daughter; sons become new baron tokens, and daughters can either be offered as wives to other players' barons (for points) or sent to a convent to become nuns (for gold).

Oh my yes. One of the people I played Ys with got that game from ThinkGeek. We tend to make lots of silly mistakes and oversights that end up costing us the game, often within one turn. I'm still better at it than he is, though. =D
He also got Pentago from ThinkGeek, and I usually slaughter him at that too, all the while saying, "You're just not thinking fourth dimensionally."

My brother and his wife introduced me to Carcassonne. I recently got a couple of the expansions for it (Inns & Cathedrals and The Tower) as well. I&C is a nice basic one that adds pieces for a sixth player and a couple of ways to try to gain points faster). The Tower completely changes the game, allowing you to abduct other players' meeples (or followers or whatever their official name is) by building towers on special new tiles; we spent every turn afraid that someone would draw a tower tile. There are around half a dozen other expansions that I may or may not get eventually (I'll probably leave most of them alone, but a few others look pretty interesting).
EDIT: I too wish we had a shop like that around here. Or if we do have one, I'd like to know what it's called and where to find it...

I also think that Meeples are what they call pieces for most board games in Europe. For this game meeples are the followers.

From reading Amazon user reviews, I think I can safely tell you to avoid The Catapult expansion at all costs...unless you want to fill the game with pure silliness. Conversely, my brother got Traders & Builders and says it's one of the best available. I haven't gotten to try it yet, but it looks interesting.

A friend and I were bored today and decided to finally play Carcassonne with all of my expansions at the same time (I have 6 full expansions and 4 mini expansions). The game took about 2.5 hours, and we tied with 504 points each.
The score board normally only goes up to 100, but we found a handy scorekeeping Android app specifically for this game. As a bonus for using the app, we don't have to use our meeples to keep score, thereby increase our pool of available followers. :D

I used to play that a few years ago with my younger brother. I admit I don't remember much about it, though./>anybody play Heroscape? i played it a few times and it was really cool. there's just nobody who would play it with me now though.
The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.

I played it once at a game shop. Seemed kinda cool. Like a sort of more rigid but easier Warhammer kind of thing. I liked it, but didn't have the investment capital to get into playing it. I wasn't aware that it had been discontinued, but I kind of understand. That was the first, and last time I ever heard mention of it until now.
