Lately I've been playing Red Dragon Inn with some friends of mine. It's a pretty alright drinking game, though not terribly challenging. It's kind of like Munchkin but with an emphasis on gold and drinking rather than leveling up.

Or, to put it more politely, "Neener neener."

I was feeling pretty good after playing a couple backgammon matches with my dad and beating him 11-0 and 8-2 (we were playing to 7 each time =p), but then I got Kamau to play with me online, and she trounced me. After supposedly not having played for a long time. =/

As my dad says, "Backgammon is a game of both skill and luck. If I win, it's skill. If you win, it's luck."

...I have been backgammoned twice in three days now (previously by Kamau, today by my dad). This is inexcusable.

Story War.
This is an amazing game. Puffin introduced me to it a while back, and I got my own copy when it went on sale a for the holidays. It's a party card game for 3-8 players in which you fight each other by telling a story. Players have cards with different warriors and items that they pit against each other on a randomly selected battlefield. They describe the actions their warrior would take to defeat the other players, and a judge player decides who would come out on top based on any criteria they want. Depending on the number of players, you could be on teams or in a free-for-all.
Scenarios tend to be quite silly, for example a dwarf on a flying carpet fighting a sky whale and ice dragon over a floating city, or a lucky leprachaun facing a mummy that gives bad luck in a creepy amusement park. There are very few rules, and you can use anything from science to pop culture to the art on the cards to argue your case for victory, whatever it takes to convince the judge.
This game came out of a successful Kickstarter. The creators are working on expansions and alternate rulesets (like court trials and a dating game), but I haven't seen anything about these on their website yet. They do have a free, printable version available though if anyone cares to give it a try.

I, too, got Story War recently (yay Christmas presents)! My sister bought herself a set and had my mom wrap it for her, so she got it for "Christmas" too.
Now I'm not saying we could probably play this via Skype, buuuuut I'm totally saying we could probably play this via Skype

ahhh, I was going to Kickstart that game...but didn't. I wish I did now. Maybe I should get it.
There's a lot of similar games to it though, like Channel A, that I might be more interested in trying.
I play a lot of board games, all the time. Most recently was Mice and Mystics and Boss Monster. Mice and Mystics is kinda DnDish but the people I was playing with didn't really get into it, so it kind of wasn't all that fun. By the end I just wanted the game to end. Boss Monster is a lot easier, but it seems like it gets really boring if you play it too much. I only played it against Bee, so I'm interested in a game with more than just 2 people. I wish there was more to the game though, because it is an interesting concept.

I also kind of wish I had Kickstarted it (I didn't know about it at the time) considering there's an expansion full of licensed characters that they only had permission to offer as a backer reward. I want Catbug, darnit!
I would be happy to try both of those games with you if I ever make it out to California. I have seen both on shelves, and both have previously caught my eye, but I haven't played either.
EDIT: Also, I found out that the guys who made the game got together with the Cartoon Hangover people to make a Story War animation. For no reason except for lulz as far as I can tell.

Half the people I've introduced to that game ended up getting it, it kinda entertains me.
Also, I'd be totally up for trying to play this game over skype or something.

We would just have to come up with a rule in case two (or more) people play the same card in a round. Or not and just roll with it, I suppose. =p

I was kind of disappointed that this didn't get picked up for a series, it was really funny and made me want to grab the game. Thanks for reminding me about it!

I'm kind of making my way through my board game backlog over the past few weeks/months.
Agricola - It took me forever to play this but damn do I love it. It's not too hard to explain to others, like Terra Mystica or Game of Thrones, and isn't a very hard game in general (although it's still a Euro game). It doesn't have a lot of randomness/luck happening, which I appreciate. My biggest issue with it is it's a bit frustrating. You really can't do everything you want in the early stages in the game, and by the time more actions open up, the game is over. Maybe I'm just not good at the game yet.
Codenames - This game reminds me of Taboo, which is one of my favorite games. You have a 5x5 grid of words and two teams. There is one person on each team who is a "spymaster." It's their job to give single word clues to the rest of their team to figure out which words in the grid pertain to them. There is definitely a difference between having a good spymaster and a bad one, which does kind of suck if you don't have a lot of good spymasters, as they'll usually end up always being a spymaster.
Sheriff of Nottingham - Another enjoyable casual/party game. The game is a little too much to explain in full, but basically you take turns being the sheriff, and they can choose whether to inspect your goods or not. You want to get your goods through the sheriff as you'll have more points/money at the end of the game, but if they inspect your goods and you aren't completely truthful you'll lose money/goods. You can circumvent this by either A) not lying (but there are rules that make that hard) or B) bribing the sheriff. When I played almost everything was allowed through and people where bribing when it really didn't make sense. I feel like if the game continues to play out like that, I'd get pretty bored of it.

But otherwise it is quick. Since most of the time you only have two actions and there is a limited amount of choices on the board. So anyone whose played it before probably already knows what they want to do when its their turn (unless everything they wanted was taken or they're the type of person to over think every move), so rounds move quickly.
The slowest part would be setting up each round, that's a bit frustrating.

Bump.
Games I've played lately/since I last posted:
Stinker - This game is pretty awesome, but sadly I probably won't be bringing it to MP Con since I let someone borrow it. It's like a combination of Scrabble + Cards Against Humanity. I have yet to get bored of this game, it's really a well thought out party game.
Broom Service - This is a neat game. I'm not entirely in love with it, but it's not that hard of a game to explain/set up and I think it's pretty accessible. If I had to compare it to anything...it's almost like Ticket to Ride, but with witches and kinda deck building?
T.I.M.E Stories - I kind of regret getting this game, because I can see my getting sick of it quickly. However, it's interesting. It's like an RPG played with cards with board game rules. It's a bit overwhelming at first, I think, but once you get the hang of it it goes pretty well.
Pandemic - I had never played Pandemic before, which is kind of weird I guess. I like it! I just wish I had better people to play with that would get into it.
Coup - Pretty simple, and I suck at it apparently.
Risk Legacy - I do not like Risk. However this might have changed my mind? It still feels way too RNG to me though. But the way it evolves is so interesting, and I like the narratives that are carved out just by playing it with the same people repeatably. Maybe it's just the group that I'm playing it with too.

I played Pandemic once, and although I was thoroughly confused, it was a lot of fun.
