I'm probably not the best runner to listen to about diet...

I don't know what people are talking about when they say hunger pains. Only pain I've ever had while running is in my shins, because I run in a hilly environment, and all those hills can be murder on them.

So here's what my diet was when I was running every day:

Mountain Dew

Pizza/Hot Dogs/Cheeseburgers - Typical high school guy foods

Candy, more candy, and candy again - I have a massive sweet tooth

And pretty much everything a runner isn't supposed to eat.

I mean, I also layered on pastas before races, and ate somewhat healthier the day before a race, but every other day, I pretty much stuck to what my body liked having. It worked out for me.

Now, my diet is a little more subdued, even though I don't run as much:

Propel or similar sports drink

LOTS of protein and carbohydrates

Still candy, because I still have a sweet tooth.

I am honestly in more pain when I run now, than I was when I was eating unhealthy and running every day. I attribute any pain anyone has while running to a lack of practice or experience. Your diet shouldn't be something forced. It should be whatever is comfortable to you and your body. Running is a mental game 99% of the time, and you have enough against you without worrying about what you are eating or should be doing. Just do what feels right, and keep at it, and eventually it will all click together.

I realize that's not very helpful.

But like I said, I'm probably not the person to listen to here.

That's a better summary. I'm deliberately trying to lose more weight so that explains my diet. Also I may have been corrupted by lots of exercise broscience.

I wish there were some kind of... free treadmills initiative... or something.

If I had a treadmill I would run all the time. I like the idea of being able to watch my stories while exercising.

I'm not fond of treadmills myself. Totally different animal from actually running outside.

I mean, sure, it'd be fun to watch TV while running outside, but if I have a choice between running on a treadmill, or running in a more natural way, I'll take the natural route every time.

It's just more fun when I can run without having to worry about falling off the treadmill because I set it too fast or slow.

I like to train on a treadmill because it keeps track of distance, time, etc. Also, it forces me to stick to the planned speed. Later when I run on a track, I find I can run faster than I've been training and then increase the treadmill training speed.

Screw running.

Liftan 4evar

Mainly because I just don't like to run without some sort of motivation. I'll run if I'm at a track meet, or a football game, or at a practice, but anything else seems boring and flat. I also don't like running because it gives me time to think, and I get depressed/bored way too fast. I mean, I need more to do than listen to the slap of my feet, and the heavy breathing of my shit. I also have shit endurance- could run a mile or two if needed, but anything past that is in uncertain territory.

Which isn't too bad for the sports I play.

This is exactly why I love running. It gives you plenty of time for self-reflection and inner balancing.

I find it to be the best stress/depression relief in the world. I like to run when I'm angry, most of my best times at races or in practices are when I'm pissed off at something or other.

Like the time I ran a 17:54 at the state meet in high school (5K - hilly course). I was pissed off as all hell when I ran it, and it felt good to let it all out.

Totes off topic from anything you guys are talking about:

I got stuff done this morning in preparation for my trip to France in spring. :)

It's kind of awesome, cuz while the thought of the trip really just made me feel terrible and anxious for a while, I'm now finally getting into the stage where constant nervousness is just turning into constant excitement.

how do you trust the french? their language is so flowery, and has too many silent letters NOT to be hiding something. Now German, THERE'S a language! It's 80% compound words that anyone with a 2nd grade reading level can grasp.

French is the only language I could understand at all aside from English.

I needed to learn a foreign language and pass a class one year to graduate my high school (which is some bullcrap, I'll never be leaving the country, and any foreigner who comes here should know how to speak MY language)

I failed Latin once and dropped out of it a second time (In my defense, the first year I failed because I switched schools, and their latin was more advanced than my school's was, and in the second year, I was more focused on not failing my harder classes, so Latin took a back seat), and Spanish didn't interest me, so I took the easiest French class I could, and passed it with like an A.

I mean really, French has to be an easy language if "I" could ace the damned class.

I hope you're not serious. That would be depressing.

I've been trying to learn french in preparation for this trip, but I'm pretty terrible at it. Even while planning what trains to take with SHE was a bit clumsy as I tried to failingly pronounce french stations (she's a french major, so I sounded even more ridiculous, I'm sure XP).  When I'm practicing, I get it, but I haven't practiced half as often as I should- and I tend to kind of forget what I've learned afterwards. So, who knows if I'm really learning anything. I guess on the plus side, I am traveling with a french major, so I probably won't have to rely on my own linguistic skills.

Also, I don't necessarily trust the french, I just want their wine and cheese.

About what? Never leaving the country, or thinking it was stupid that I was required to learn a foreign language to graduate? (or something else entirely?)

On the two listed above, I'm totally serious. I don't see myself ever leaving the country, unless I go to an English speaking country like the UK. And I did have to learn a foreign language to graduate, and it was terrible. I get that we should expand our horizons and everything, but I have zero aptitude for language, and shouldn't be forced to learn something I'm really not generally capable of.

I've visited Taiwan. Like most Asian island countries, it is densely populated as fuck and you don't know where the fuck you are because everything looks the same.

As for foreign languages, the school I go to- (recap: The one I had to stay in 7th for) has me take Spanish. This was because I couldn't take Latin and screw French. That damn accent. Anyways, it's easy as fuck insofar. The words that aren't cognates are just easy. It also helps that my dad knows quite a bit of it. It's all basic shit though, so I can tell you where your backpack is.

No, that was it. Your explanation on the language thing is much better than the offhanded comment from before. XD I can get that, though, NY requires you pass a language to graduate and prefers if you pass two years, at that (ithat 2nd year is basically crammed down your throat whether you like it or not)- and while I can say that it should be mandatory for students to at least take the class, I don't think it should be mandatory to pass it graduate. Some people just can't do that stuff.

Though if you do ever travel outside the country, you shouldn't feel it necessary to limit yourself by the language they speak. I've known lots of people who've traveled to countries when they didn't speak more than a word or two of the local language and it's never been a problem because of how widespread english is.

Yeah, I love English. It's great. It's hard as hell to learn, but it's great.

I mean, I have nothing against languages like French, or Spanish, or what have you, but I have zero aptitude for it. I'd love to be able to speak a language like Japanese for example, in fact, I've tried on numerous occasions to learn it.

However, some people like me just don't have that ability lol

I honestly think that we should all speak a modernized version of Latin. It's extremely easy to learn. I also love how in Latin a simple reordering of words can carry massive weight as far as it's philosophical implications. It's a very poet/literature-friendly language.

We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further!
