+Hired at the post office.
+They want me to start Monday
-I won't be able to give my current employer a respectful notice...

Do let me know if a nice government job is worth it. I would LOVE weekends and holidays off.

I don't think that's a nation-wide thing. We live in a rural area where people still rely on USPS so I think they would probably continue doing it here, longer.

It was a nation-wide thing. USPS can't pick and choose like that since it's owned by the government. The USPS really can't choose to do anything considering it was going to stop doing letter deliveries (just normal first class post) on Saturday starting this summer for everyone (to save money), but was overturned by Congress or something. So now they have to, for now.

You know what would suck though? If we stopped receiving any mail at all because USPS tanked and went bankrupt. That would really blow.

Then again, the postal service is a bit archaic anyways...

I think for the small amount of mail people receive these days it probably should. UPS and FedEx have shown us that the private sector can handle packages just fine (usually) and some people even send letters and stuff that way. I don't know how much money USPS receives from government funding but I'll blindly assume it's a number larger than $0.

Actually I looked it up and found this:

The USPS does get some taxpayer support. Around $96 million is budgeted annually by Congress for the "Postal Service Fund." These funds are used to compensate USPS for postage-free mailing for all legally blind persons and for mail-in election ballots sent from US citizens living overseas. A portion of the funds also pays USPS for providing address information to state and local child support enforcement agencies.

Okay so never mind what I said, the USPS is just fine.

What do you mean the USPS is fine?

http://www.npr.org/b...-dollar-payment

96 million is insignificant point of a point of a percent of the USPS budget. It's absolutely not fine. And it's only because of Congress. It would actually be fine and profitable if it wasn't for Congress.

But if the USPS went out of business that'd be pretty terrible. It is one of the biggest employers in the whole country and there is no guarantee UPS/Fed Ex would deliver all letters, deliver to everyone, and deliver on Saturdays. Not to mention, USPS keeps prices down. If USPS didn't exist I would just never mail anything ever because UPS/Fed Ex prices can get pretty ridiculous.

Are you arguing in the same post that the USPS is both necessary and useless?

I don't see how I said it was useless (maybe you read my post differently then I meant?). I don't view it useless at all.

i used to have a gov't contract to move mail between chicago and milwaukee. it's super cheap when truckers aren't unionized and have pesky 401k's. $350 for 20 tons of direct mail advertisements and bills? bank.

-Stayed up all night working on my animation final (due tomorrow).

--Class today, where I'll have to finish my painting final (I'm hoping I'll be able to hold a paint brush steadily despite sleep deprivation and caffience jitters).

+ Almost done with my animation final!

-Had to cut out a bunch of stuff and take short cuts, so it doesn't look as good as it could.

Soon I'll have a life again? (srsly, my life for the past few weeks has been wake up, animate and sleep. the only time I take breaks- aside from when I'm at classes- is to eat and because I'm kind of a workaholic, I've mostly only been eating once a day. I only really hope I can finish thing tonight, otherwise it may be two all nighters in a row...)

-/+ Just seriously almost lost my cool over flash. For some reason the prime file I've been working with didn't save, like, half the work I'd done last night/today... Thankfully, my backup did, so I lost nothing. Though I have no idea why my original file didn't save, since it had been saved multiple times before the point it had opened at. (already lost my work once during this project, so I'm really paranoid about it...)
