3. Battle system isn't necessarily confusing, but tedious.
I've heard that this is a huge problem in most Ys games, which is sad because reading about the story and characters made me really want to play, but listening to everyone moan about the atrocious battle systems in all of the games turned me off...
Seven is actually the first Ys game to have a battle system that's annoyed me, and that's just because they've attempted to incorporate the concept of assigning specific skills to specific button combinations. Don't get me wrong; I like that battle system just fine in other games I've played that have it, but I just don't feel like it's for this game. (It's obviously not, because they nixed it in every game after it. ...Though, looking it up, it's apparently the newest game, which utterly confuses me because of how many things were way better in all the others...In that case, I revise my opinion to: please don't make this a reoccurring theme if/when you bring more Ys games over!) I think my issue with it in this game is that they don't explain it enough, or give you reason not to button mash. I'm not sure if it's because I'm still near the beginning of the game or what, but my "skills" don't seem to improve my damage count over regular skills by much.
Boss fights in general in this game are a pain in the butt due to this battle system. The fight starts and I kind of just start wailing away on the boss, doing what feels like no damage at all while it beats on me with each hit. My "skills" aren't anything refreshing or awesome, they're just combo attacks that I'd much rather have come into play by me hitting it repeatedly on my own, and my "special skill" doesn't seem to want to come into play no matter what buttons I hit (I'm going to have to look into that, and see if I'm just not hitting the right combination at the right time or something...). While I can "roll out of the way" of an attack by pressing a button, I also can't jump, which is a personal irritation because every other game had me jumping there. It's just a personal issue because I press the button intending to jump out of the way, and then I get hit by the attack because I didn't specify which way I wanted to roll...
They've given me the opportunity to use more than one type of healing item per battle, which is nice, but at the same time they've eliminated the ability for me to pick up healing items from battle spoils, instead forcing me to go to town and buy them like most other RPGs. (Then again, every Ys game has done this differently. In
Ark of Napishtim, I could stock up on all of the healing items, but only equip and use one type for each battle. In
Oath of Felghana, I could purchase certain types of more powerful healing items to equip for boss battles, but enemies still dropped smaller healing items, though rather than letting me keep them they just healed me instantly and I moved on. It was kind of nice.)
I do find it interesting that the game allows me to switch between characters in-battle, and that each character has a different type of attack that works better on a different type of monster. However, this feels choppy to me at times, and I've never liked not being able to fully control the character I'm not focused on (I hate when they die because I'm not fully paying attention). However, I've discovered that, for the most part, the character I'm not currently utilizing won't die in a boss fight. Or at least, not as quickly. That's at least a little nice of them, considering I can't make the second character get out of the way of an attack.
I'm sure I've missed a few things that I wanted to say, but it's time to head to class.
Also: Fluffy, I am jealous of your PS3.
