I've been surfing Reddit a lot lately. Haven't been posting or voting much, mostly just lurking. I've known about reddit since it started, but am only just now getting in to it. It's been useful to find new and interesting things, but I don't have any urges to use it for more than that.

However, there is a trend that bothers me a lot. Several of the subreddits are "such-and-suchporn." For example, AbandonedPorn, or QuotesPorn, etc. Let me say that I'm not bothered by pornography, but for some reason I am bothered by the use of the word "porn" in these instances. Here the word seems to just mean "pretty pictures," but the word has a pretty specific meaning, and it doesn't leave a lot to the imagination.

Am I just some old prude, and I shouldn't be bothered by this? Am I just not internet enough to get it? I don't know. But I intentionally avoid these subreddits in spite of their collection of pretty good content.

Nah, the such-and-such porn thing kind of annoys me too. And I don't think it necessarily means "pretty pictures." Sometimes it's "pictures to excite you if you're into that sort of thing," like the History Porn app or whatever that's just full of normal photos of important historical events.

as someone who likes stuff like 'abandonedporn' it's more about the idea of adventure and discovery being within the reach of someone like me, who doesn't submarine or a hot air balloon. for us normal people, society has abolished all adventure. to find a long lost place or object is to rediscover something that's been forgotten.

I agree, and in fact really like the content. I just wish that they would come up with a better naming convention.

Seems like a valid description of me. It's just gratuitous photos of these things for the sake of looking at them. It is kind of dumb, since someone who might like that sort of thing could be put off by the name, and never even look at it, but I guess it works.

But that's the problem, the content isn't obscene, and you might even argue that some of it has artistic merit. It's all part of their SFW Porn Network. I almost want to go complete prude on the name and say that calling some of this "porn" actually lowers the value of the content. But sigh. I'll just go be a stodgy old curmudgeon over here, now.
