Pacific Coast News sold the image to TMZ which helped popularize it. No claims about its validity have been made by any major news organization. Several internet communities, such as Reddit, have pointed out what appear to be flaws that indicate some form of image manipulation, but it's just empty speculation.

I've heard of that. I can't remember the reason, and the idea sounds absurd, but after reading about it, it didn't bother me. Did they happen to say why?

i was just like 'umm.... ok...;' they just said i had to take the bucket down.
oh, and i TOTALLY kept the rain water (it's for my catnip, the tap water has chlorine, which kills beneficial bacteria)

its an electricity meter that gatjers dataon what is using power in your home and where. the data is then sold to whomever by the electric company to whomever in order to translate into demographic data for advertising companies, or to determine if youre running an unlicensed business from home, or growing dope, or any myriad of sinister practice.

That's just a huge pile of misinformation. They're not changing the wiring in my house, or any of my devices to show them what's happening. All they can do is track peaks and drops in electricity usage.
