i just asked a jew for advice on a slave joke.

wait lemme back up.

so the voyager satellites have both left the heliosphere, and the interesting thing about them is that they have golden records on them with all sorts of images and recordings of our different civilizations. they're all pretty awful, but one of them is a slave song. i think this is just an incredible oversight by nasa, because once the aliens find them, they'll know we're ready to get to work. i thought it would be pretty funny to open my next standup set with that bit, and try to get the audience to sing a slave song with me. the song is actually a gospel song, but try and picture white people in an office singing it. the point is, i want to try and provoke someone in the audience so i can argue with them, and then close with something like: if this was 50 years ago (uncomfortable pause and eye contact with a minority) we wouldn't have been born yet and our parents would still be happy.

i wasn't sure if that crossed any lines or not, so i asked another comic. she said she didn't know. i think it still counts as advice.

That sounds awesome. I would laugh. That sounds like something you can certainly pull off as long as you own it.

I've been doing a lot of deep thinking after watching some recent episodes of Steven Universe. Man I love it when a cartoon can make me think. It made me remember some really great stories I'd watched in the last year. Because I've been so amped on the motivational side of those stories recently, I was thinking about them when doing my workout session today. Thinking about the characters I love and how strong they are to push through that last set. Then I realized something:

All of the characters that were inspiring me were women.

  • Garnet from Steven Universe
  • Ryoku from Kill La Kill
  • Korra from Legend of Korra

Where have all the good men gone?! Though it is pretty badass that there are strong female characters to inspire things while lifting weights.

if you swap their genders,do their stories change? i had a conversation with someone who was really amped up about a female character in a play, but she wasn't as excited when she found out it was written as a man's part. she said that the character's strength came from her being a "woman" in the plot, but i said i thought genders were meaningless labels that just give people in the audience a set of expectations to project onto the characters. she disagreed.

edit: buuuut we need more strong female characters to help shift the balance of those social norms towards the positive.

Garnet definitely not. All the Crystal Gems have feminine designs, but I'm pretty sure that they don't actually have sexes. She's the strong leader and that wouldn't change with gender.

Ryoku as a character I don't think would change that much, but it would certainly change the story/show. Her revealing outfit isn't unique to the female cast as the Nudist Beach group has men going commando. There's so much going on in the show that pushes against stereotypes in anime and for women but then there are some things that cater to those stereotypes, too. In the end I wouldn't care if the show's cast was gender swapped, although male Ryoku wearing a skimpy outfit would probably make me uncomfortable. In my defense, I was uncomfortable with the Nudist Beach teacher and his glowing nipples.

Korra has some topics that are gender focused like her love life, but the show never made a point to exaggerate the fact she was a she. If anything they went out of their way with her design to make her not feminine since she is buff. Outside of romance stuff I never saw her sex playing a part into who she was as a character beyond what would happen for anybody. Me being male does define aspects of me. It would be ridiculous to expect a show to not touch on any aspects of a character's sex in order to separate them from gender stereotypes. That's just not how people work.

I stumbled upon a video of a piano cover of the Attack on Titan OP, and there was a link in the description to download the sheet music. However, just looking at it makes me feel our of practice...

EDIT: Fixed the link.

brought down the house tonight. i get thrown under a table in act 1. tonight, my foot got caufht on the tablecloth, and flung everything but the champaign onto the floor as i dragged the tablecloth under the table with me. huge crash, huge mess, and i can't see how bad it is since the tablecloth is on top of me. during intermission, everyone asks me what happened. they played it off really well, and the audience laughed a lot at it. it really made the play goofier. we ran through the rest of the show perfectly, and ad libbed a lot of jokes that landed well. all in all, it was a good way to end its run.

Signed up for a site/app called HabitRPG. This is pretty much exactly the kind of app I wanted to develop on for working out, but this is actually better because you can use it for a bunch of stuff to get into the habit of. Since I went to the dentist yesterday I added brushing my teeth and flossing to daily tasks. Either I will stun my dentist in 6 months, or my character will have died several times.

Let me know if any of you guys check it out. You can create questing parties to fight bosses with. I think it sounds like a great way to form good habits with group reinforcement.

Any of you interested in forming a party? It occurs to me that I'm level 5, and I have yet to do any rpg stuff beyond equipment upgrades.

I'm assuming that wasn't supposed to happen?

I was in a play once (I was one of the more talkative secondary characters, basically a plot device character) and my job in one scene was actually to break a glass. I also was one of the only characters whose actions took place off the stage itself (at times I had to go into the crowd for dramatic effect).

I like acting, but I don't like dealing with the people in the business, so I never took it beyond that play.

With scars that show that we care a lot
In the sky we dreamt like a juggernaut
Of the things we'd do and what we saught

I always seem to end up playing "the drunk" whenever I'm cast for a play. Which is especially odd considering I've never actually been drunk.

Apparently I don't understand how fire alarms work at hospitals because nobody else came outside.

What happened is the alarm went off, someone on the paging system said "code red" a couple times, and nobody I could see seemed to care.

What are they going to say if there's actually a fire?
"Code Red. For real this time! Seriously, everyone leave the building!"

I think they specified a department for the code red, but I didn't catch it.

I asked a co-worker what we're supposed to do when that happens. His first answer was, "Which one is code red again?" His second answer was, "Oh, just stay in the room and if you have a patient, make sure they stay in the room too.

I've been really quiet lately because I've been really busy.

Here is what I've been doing:

  • I got sick like three weeks ago.
  • But also had a conference the same week in Orlando.
  • Started our (me and my manager/friend) trip to Orlando with a delayed flight (while we were still in Fresno).
  • Got to Phoenix where our layover was but we got there after our connecting flight took off so we were given an option, fly out at 11pm (it was like 3pm at time time) and get to Charlotte at 6am and then fly from there to Orlando (be there around noon) OR stay the night in Phoenix and fly out in the morning and still get there around noon. We took the latter option.
  • Because of that missed the first day (probably most important one too) of conference.
  • Went to the conference, it was nice. Learned some stuff, got to eat lots of fancy foods for free.
  • Went to Universal Studios after the conference every day. Also Saturday since we got a hotel for an extra day. Got to see the Springfield and Harry Potter areas which were awesome. Drank lots of Butterbeer. Won lots of Simpsons dolls. It also rained because Florida is a gross place and yeah.
  • Was still sick during all of this and just got worse.
  • Was sick all day the day I came home, and worked remotely sick the next week.
  • Got Animal Crossing: New Leaf for Bee.
  • She enjoyed it a lot.
  • Got Animal Crossing: New Leaf for me because it was really the only Platinum Award on Club Nintendo I wanted and was worth getting.
  • Both of us have been playing that a lot.
  • Just been so very busy outside of short Animal Crossing breaks since I stopped being sick. I worked like 60 hours last week.
  • Also just been lazy.
  • Going to get busy again soon starting next weekend.

I'm sorry. :(
