I haven't gone to a concert in forever. I didn't even go to HSB like I said. Now I am going to a lot of things:

Next month I'm going to see The Postal Service in Davis, Langhorne Slim in town, maybe Dinosaur Jr. in Fresno, maybe Stars in Santa Cruz, and then in May Colin Meloy with Robyn Hitchcock in San Francisco and of Montreal in San Francisco. Annnnd then hopefully Camera Obscura sometime in June, don't know where yet.

Not quite a concert, but should I go to the Radiohead laser light show?

The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.

Saw The Postal Service.

It was really super disappointing, but it doesn't feel that way because OHMYGOD I never expected to ever see The Postal Service.

Not that the music was bad, for their second show in 9 years they were pretty good, but ugh, everything else. It was in a seated venue, which was okay, but their opener was Baths, who would have been far better in a non seated environment. He was okay, he had his moments of greatness, but he kind of just came off as generic electronica at times.

The audience was a dud. It was a bunch of old yuppies and bored college kids. The worst. The audience didn't seem to have any enthusiasm, at least from where I was (up front, fourth row center). Ben/Jenny tried to get people to sing along at the end but people were idiots and didn't realize it or something and they just gave up on us. The only time anyone seemed much interested was during We Will Become Silhouettes and Such Great Heights. No one seemed to care about Turn Around or A Tattered Line of String, which was disappointing. It was nice everyone stood up during them though, no one sat, so the being in a seated venue thing wasn't so bad.

Also their set was barely over an hour. Don't know if I can be too disappointed, because that was basically every Postal Service song and two covers...but it just felt like too little. Especially since I had to drive two hours.

We probably shouldn't have been so eager to go, if we didn't buy the tickets immediately we could have gone to the Berkeley show (that was announced later) with a better venue (one of my favorites) and probably a better show (because it's months from now). Buuuuuuuut, I'm so very glad I got to see them.

I saw Godspeed You! Black Emperor the other night. They put on a pretty good show. If I had to think of a couple nitpicks it'd be that I wish they had a bigger string section (it was just one violinist and a guy that played double bass on one or two songs) and I wish they played a little more of their old stuff (they played Gathering Storm and Dead Metheny, the rest was from their new album and one 45 minute song they've been playing since last year). But the fact that there's new GY!BE material at all is something I'm totally ok with. There was a lot I'd never heard before. They were also a LOT heavier than what I was expecting, and with four or five guitarists the sound got a bit clusterfucky, but thats probably mostly the venue's sound more than anything.

Opening band sucked a lot, though. Unbelievably boring.

I've seen Godspeed twice now. One time the guitars did sound like a bit of a clusterfuck, the other time they sounded as clear and crisp as anywhere on Lift Yr Skinny Fists...

They used to have a cellist, but she somehow didn't make the re-union, which is a shame. They sound more conventionally rocky, even punk-ish, without her. It's also maybe the reason they don't play much of their old stuff. They've changed drummers too thinking about it.

How did the 45 minute piece (titled 'Behemoth'?) sound? I've only heard shitty recordings and it doesn't really seem like the direction I want Godspeed to head toward. It kinda feels like ever since Lift Yr. Skinny Fists they've abandoned experimenting with the, uhm, "micro" aspects of compositions (ie the interplay of different melodies, drones and rhythms) and allowing organic development in favour of producing more segmented and regimented song structures that sprawl far too long and feel contrived when they shift gears.

I'll stop there. I could talk about this band forever.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I enjoyed Behemoth overall, but there were a few loud droney bits that I couldn't get into all that much and just went on for too long. Didn't seem to be as many quiet, intricate moments that build up seamlessly. It's a little hard to say, though, I definitely enjoyed the experience. I'd love to see them again at a better venue.

I just got back from Rice County Rock Fest. I'm not a fan of screamo and that was 90% of the bands, but the last band wasn't horrible. Victims of the Spotlight https://www.facebook...timsOfSpotlight

We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further!
