that's a great lesson to be had by all and everything, but one thing about the bible really really really bothers me.

if the bible is so great and so perfect and so true, why hasn't anything been added to it in the last thousand years? if god, as you call him, really exists, AND hasn't abandoned us, why hasn't anything been added to His word? It seems to me at least, that if God is real, and still loves us even after that whole adam and eve thing, we should at least have had the benefit of His word to guide us towards sanctuary in the last millenium or so. i saw this great movie called Zeitgeist not too long ago, and there is a huge part of it dedicated to how every religion is basically centered around sun-worshipping. that basically means that we're all wiccan, or at least pagans, right?

I wish that were the worst offense toward women in the bible. I just finished reading the first three books of the old testament (I'm going to make it all the way through this thing one day), and it truly is appalling the kinds of rules that apply to women, but not men. If I'm in the mood later, I'll post them.

Jesus fuck, I was kidding when I made my comment, but I was right...

Barnes and Noble no longer sells this book.

Here are some details:

1) The Pearls recommend whipping infants only a few months old on their bare skin. They describe whipping their own 4 month old daughter (p.9). They recommend whipping the bare skin of "every child" (p.2) for "Christians and non-Christians" (p.5) and for "every transgression" (p.1). Parents who don't whip their babies into complete submission are portrayed as indifferent, lazy, careless and neglectful (p.19) and are "creating a Nazi" (p.45).

2) On p.60 they recommend whipping babies who cannot sleep and are crying, and to never allow them "to get up." On p.61 they recommend whipping a 12 month old girl for crying. On p.79 they recommend whipping a 7 month old for screaming.

3) On p.65 co-author Debi Pearl whips the bare leg of a 15 month old she is babysitting, 10 separate times, for not playing with something she tells him to play with. On p.56 Debi Pearl hits a 2 year old so hard "a karate chop like wheeze came from somewhere deep inside."

4) On p.44 they say not to let the child's crying while being hit to "cause you to lighten up on the intensity or duration of the spanking." On p.59 they recommend whipping a 3 year old until he is "totally broken."

5) On p.55 the Pearls say a mother should hit her child if he cries for her.

6) On p.46 the Pearls say that if a child does obey before being whipped, whip them anyway. And "if you have to sit on him to spank him, then do not hesitate. And hold him there until he is surrendered. Prove that you are bigger, tougher." "Defeat him totally." On p.80 they recommend giving a child having a tantrum "a swift *forceful* spanking." On the same page they say to whip small children on their bare skin until they stop screaming. "Don't be bullied. Give him more of the same." They say to continue whipping until their crying turns into a "wounded, submissive whimper."

7) On p.47 they recommend their various whips, including "a belt or larger tree branch" to hit children.

8) The Pearls recommend pulling a nursing infant's hair (p.7), and describe tripping their non-swimming toddler so she falls into deep water (p.67). They recommend ignoring an infant's bumped head when he falls to the floor, and ignoring skinned knees (p.86). They also say "if your child is roughed-up by peers, rejoice." (p.81) And on p.103 the Pearls say if children lose their shoes, "let them go without until they (the children) can make the money to buy more."

9) The Pearls claim their "training" methods are Godly, yet they have *no religious training or credentials* They never mention Jesus' injunctions to forgive "seventy times seven" and be merciful, and they decry the "extraordinary ingnorance of modern psychology."

The Pearls' methods have resulted in parents being investigated by Child Protective Services, children being taken away from parents, a restraining order against a father, and even a babysitter going to jail on felony charges!

This book can't be serious, can it? My word.

To the greatest signature in the world! All right! It was the greatest signature in the world all right.

And the peculiar thing is this, my friends. The signature I made on that fateful night didn't actually look anything like this signature! This is just a tribute. You've gotta believe me, and I wish you were there. Just a matter of opinion. So last night I was reading my trusty Bible, and I came across a passage that made me stop and think. This comes from Joshua, chapter 10.

http://www.biblegate...amp;version=NIV

13 So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.
The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a man. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!

15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

I haven't looked in to it much, and I don't know that I will, buuuuuuut.....

Doesn't this contradict the modern creationist argument of "fine tuning?" The earth/sun positioning, and the supposedly perfect rotation of all of us in the cosmos... But to have had the sun stay still in the sky for a half a day? Why didn't the whole world just kinda fall apart at this apparent disruption of fine tuning?

Oh the bible is fun.

I don't really think it's surprising that something in the bible would contradict modern Creationist arguments. I mean, wasn't the whole argument for Creationists created long, long after anything in the bible? So, the idea that they'd overlook something or just ignore it all together, isn't that shocking. :p

That is true, though that doesn't stop the arguments.

I only bring this up because people want the literal truth of the bible to line up with scientific fact, when it rarely does. Of course, we all probably agree with that, even with our different perspectives on the topic.

This is just something I have been thinking about for a few months. See, the earth and all life on it is supposedly so fine tuned that changing a few natural constants by the tiniest amount would end, well, everything. But don't the bible, and its most staunch supporters, teach us that god can do anything? That through god, all things are possible? This passage from Joshua would certainly imply that! The sun friggin' stood still in the sky for crying out loud!!

...

I just have to ask, though, that if god can do anything, why does fine tuning matter? If god wanted life to exist on Mars, or Jupiter, or on the sun, couldn't he just magically will it in to existence? If gravity were reversed, and water made of macaroni, couldn't god create life that exists in that world? He is, after all, capable of anything.

But... if we change some silly natural constants by the smallest amount, life ceases to exist.

It doesn't fit.
