I keep looking between the first picture in this thread and your EofM photo. I don't know what it is, but you don't look like the same person! Maybe it's the lighting. I think in the crown photo you look awesome though.

I can get that. His hair is longer, his beard is less patchy and he's wearing glasses in the latest picture, so altogether, it may look like a totally different person. It's also just a really good photo in general.

I went to a wedding in Monterey for probably my oldest friend in the world (second oldest is probably Toys, I don't have any friends). He used to post here as Sinuyen I think.

Anyways,

Here is a me.

Snappy tie, man. Why do I feel like I have the worst ties of all my friends?

Probably because I haven't bought ties since I was like18.

I bought that tie that morning. It is also the only tie I own.

It is a nice tie though. I got it for $11 at Macys. Ties are way too expensive for things that are more annoying than they are necessary.

You actually have a tie?

I don't think I've ever owned a tie.

I did not own or in fact ever wear a tie until after I was married.

The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.

I wore a necktie on a nice shirt, slacks, and suit jacket every Friday for 4 years of high school. Debate tournaments meant leaving school early and I didn't want to change in the bathroom.

Neckties are underrated.

The only time I've ever even worn a tie was during events like graduation, my mom's marriage, and for a couple of sporting events when I was playing basketball as a freshman. I had to borrow a tie for all those occasions.

It still seems absolutely stupid to me that the mandated dress code in high school for traveling team basketball was a tie. Like, fuck, it's not like the people I'm playing against care if I wear a tie or not, so what the hell?

I ran cross country for four years in high school. Not once was I required to wear a tie. Even at prestigious events where a tie would have been more acceptable I suppose. Like the state championships. Or the end of season award ceremony.

This is one of the many ways cross country is better than basketball. You are allowed to just be yourself and no one gives a damn.

Now I'm going to rant:

What is up with funeral attire nowadays? Black semi-formal was standard. It's a sign of respect for the deceased and for those attending. I've been to 2 funerals in the past year and wore my black suit and black tie. For the most part, non family attendees were dressed in everyday casual clothes.

Have we gotten to the point where we've stopped caring how we look? Have we stopped dressing for the occasion? I'm not suggesting strict social code and shunning those who don't conform (so calm down, teenagers).

Dressing up is appropriate, and it certainly isn't arbitrary. At each of the funerals I attended I received compliments on my dress from both family and non family members. They appreciated my sign of respect.

A little sacrifice for social code won't kill you.

We have maybe two teenage members, and neither of them has yet said anything on this topic.

I think there's a difference between going to a funeral dressed in casual clothing, and going to things like sporting events in casual clothes.

I haven't been to a funeral in years, and I don't plan to go to any, even though I do have family near ready for death. It's not that I don't want to go or don't think I can be respectful, it's more that I just don't know these people that are dying.

Like, my great aunt died in August this year, and I could have gone to her funeral, but didn't for various reasons. One of them being that I knew absolutely nothing about her other than the fact she constantly called our house, and spoke with a drunken voice asking if my grandmother was home. She may have been family, but I flat out didn't know her. I didn't think it would be my place to be there, since I knew absolutely nothing about her.

But getting back to the topic at hand, while I don't disagree that people today don't care how they look, I also don't honestly think it's too serious a problem. For the most part, I believe people are way too serious about how people look in certain places. There's a time and a place for everything, but I think the range of things where you need to dress nice should be knocked down to bare essentials like a marriage, a funeral, or a graduation. Something that is actually serious.

I mean, seriousness is also subjective, but I don't honestly think there's much of a right or a wrong when it comes to how people dress, simply because everyone sees things differently.

One of my cousins wore leopard print to our grandmother's funeral. But it was okay because "it has black in it."

...Also she was a teenager.
