Recurrence is the title of a short game I'm making for a gamejam on another board. The goal is to make a "10 minute game", so I'm thinking that if I make it a permadeath game by design, and implement a new game + feature, I can make a game that not only takes about ten minutes to play through (because the fights are going to be Dark Souls hard) but also can be beaten in ten minutes once you power up your characters, and get better weapons, armor, and skills. Since each game is a forced permadeath, each "game" should last around 10 minutes or so. 

 

 

COOL STORY BRO

 

You start out as a nameless spirit in a dungeon. You manage to escape your cell, and learn your only chance to return to life is to inhabit the bodies of the dead, and use their unique powers in harmony, to prove yourself worthy of a second life. 

 

You must pass the trials of ten boss characters, each testing both your individual merits, and your ability to find balance between different classes of characters as you unlock them in order to reach the end as a team, without changing classes.

 

Character classes are divided into the standard Strength, Magic, and Agility archtypes. As you progress through the dungeon, you will free the souls of others to inhabit bodies to bring balance to your team. Balancing isn't forced, but some classes don't compliment others very well. 

 

 

COOL MECHANICS BRO

 

Some cool things I'm working on incorporating into this project so it won't be too flat:

 

-Elementally calculated damage through equipped armor.

-Stealing/Mugging abilities.

-Skills like PSI Thunder that hit random targets.

-Learn skills through weapon use.

-Characters who morph and summon allies as party members.

-Big character select screen so you can build each class as an individual.

-Level up and equip your morphed forms and summoned allies.

-100% Custom graphics.

-midi music for smaller filesize.

-Hard Mode.

-Roulette Mode: Fight the bosses in random order.

-Infinite Recurrence Mode: Fight infinite stream of bosses to set high scores.

 

 

The deadline for the gamejam is August 1st, but I'm abnormally excited about this project. Everything is written on paper, I just need to translate it all into the program, make the maps, and test it. Once it's done, I'll upload the game here, and I'll add a screen in the credits telling people to come here.

Really cool man, but August isn't that far off, are you sure you can do all of that in time? Especially the bit about custom graphics

some of the battlers are recycled others are going to be battle "portraits" just to be different, and the tiles are mostly done. charsets are going to be a challenge for the bigger monsters. all the gear is in the database. there are 128 equipable pieces of armor for your human characters alone. the summons and morphs will have about 3-5 pieces each.

 

I made a battle portrait so I don't have to edit a charset, just the battler. It lets me add a lot more different detail to the face without it having to reflect on the charset as much.

I am intrigued.

 

I've played games similar, where the main goal is to "just keep hammering your way through until you do", but they didn't really have much of a class system. It was more about the equipment than anything.

 

Somehow, the fact classes exist would make it more interesting, and less of a lesson in madness.

i just finished final fantasy tactics, and spent at least 30 hours trying out every class. doing that was the actual game for me. each class is a seperate party member, so you have to keep training some up to be able to beat certain bosses.

today i'm going to make a few rooms, find a charset and draw a portrait for the necromancer, and test the new game + script so i have time to modify it.

working on my last battle portrait. Jason was the idea behind the psychopath class, and i was able to find a charset for him, so he's in.

that leaves-
12 more small maps
20 charsets (which only need one pose)
58 pieces of armor (total 128)
40 weapons
maybe a dozen or so custom animations
game/script testing
4 battle themes
title theme/screen
credits sequence

 

Engineer: He's like a time mage / tinkerer. he stops, slows, speeds, and magic ups.

Is this just the HUDF with a flame fractal pasted on it and a couple of filters?

Also it would be awesome if you would animate at least the stars twinkling.

it's two HUDFs with another nebula added in. paint daubs, cross hatch, and cutout filters, along with h/s/b and level adjustments to bring out more layers of color. i'd love to animate it, but it's a panorama, and i havent found any scripts for that. there's a script for visually unlimited layers, and of course it needed the rtab system to work last time i checked.

Place individual animations over certain areas to make it twinkle? Or place another image over it and continuously shift the transparency up and down with a parallel process to make it pulse?

i'll try that. i remember trying to do a few parallel processes to have some characters training against a strawman, but the constant use of the battle animation killed the framerate. i can do this with events, so i'll make some charsets and try it out.
