So about a year ago I set up a payment gateway for a small local business. I got an email from their boss the other day saying that they were having some weird problems with it so I dropped in to their office to check it out.

I was looking through the old code and I quickly realized why it was all going terribly wrong. I had at some point removed all of the validation for transactions. This means that if someone got to the payment page and cancelled the transaction or was declined then the website would still consider it as a completed purchase. This is an epic fuck up and it's been like that for over a year now.

Needless to say I explained to the boss that it was an obscure error caused by users having the same page opened in multiple tabs and must have cropped up recently due to implementation of new HTML5 standards. I think he bought it. I checked through the logs and there must be hundreds, maybe thousands of pounds worth of orders that were declined or cancelled. God, I'm hoping he doesn't find out about this.

Worst thing is I can't seem to find the documentation I used to set up the validation in the first place so I haven't been able to fix the problem and I'm charging him by the hour to resolve this issue.

I'm pretty sure I could get taken to court for negligence if he finds out the extent of this problem.

o.o Wow, man, yeah that's some serious stuff. I've never meddled in payment processing, but if you need some help, I might be able to be of some assistance.

Thanks, I appreciate the offer. I should be okay once I am able to get in touch with the payment gateway and confirm what parameters they post to the callback.

Resolved the problem pretty quickly today. I didn't dare tally how much I'd lost the company in sales. Hopefully their accountant won't stumble across it until I'm out of the country. I double-checked the contract agreement from last year and in it I agree to enable their site to accept payments - I said nothing about verifying them!

So technically you could redirect those payments to go to you.

I'd need a merchant account with my bank, and the payment gateway is set up in the companies name. Processing credit card payments isn't quite as flexible as bitcoin unfortunately :(

Processing creditcards through integration with Card Handlers are very easy, some of the easiest payment transfer integrations I've made.

There are a variety of Card handlers you can use that work with WorldPay etc

I have an interview in about an hour for a position as Lead Programmer. It's stressing me out, so I'm just going to spend the time before it not doing work and being here. That'll get me the job, right?

ha. I wish, and I'm not even a drinker.

I think it went well. I'll know soon enough though. I'll be slightly disappointed because there's two opening and only three applicants. So...I would be the odd man out. But he started off saying if not now, soon, and I think I did as well as I could possibly do.

Thanks!

I don't want to pad my ego out too much, just in case of disappointment (especially since the job would come with a decent raise. At least 20%.).

I'm relieved I got through it. This morning my manager asked me "why do you want to be Lead Programmer?" just to test me, and my response was "ehhh...yeah I'm going to fail this".

Ironically, if I do get the job, it'll be for my current Lead Programmer's position (or another's, I guess, but that doesn't make much sense for me to switch teams) and he'll move into a new position of still being my boss. So all in all my job won't change by much. Which might be a reason as to why I'll get it.

But I also have limited managing experience. So yeah, not trying to think I'll get it, but it's also kind of hard not to since I think I really want it.

Wow this is old. I'm lead for my team in a few months, but replacing my old leads replacement. Weird world.

Also in more cool job news, my cool job is sending me and my cool current lead programmer to a conference in Orlando. It's three days going over some program we use. But we have an extra day 1/2 of enjoyment (although we had to front the money for the last nights stay).

I'm totally going to Hogwarts.
