I am really hoping that it gets an evolution and that it gets...more for its design. Simple designs can work for Pokemon. I quite like the simplicity of Magnemite and Grimer. The problem I have with this new Pokemon is I cannot tell where its face is! it looks like just a sword, I cannot tell where the Pokemon bit comes into play. It appears to have a ghostly hand which is neat. Other than that I find it hard to see it as a Pokemon rather than an object.

I don't know until I see them in action, but the Ampharos looks awesome. 

 

It does sound kinda like Digimon though...but who cares?

No. Just some of them.

 

So far it's just Kangaskhan, Lucario, Mewtwo, Ampharos (Whose Mega is also part Dragon), Blazekin, Mawile (who is also now Fairy), and Absol.

Ampharos-Mold Breaker
Khangaskhan-Parental Bond<new ability
Lucario-Adaptability 
Mawile keeps Huge Power
Blaziken gets the dream world ability Speed Boost
Mewtwo-Insomnia
(not sure if it makes them have said abilities when changed)

It's just a temporary evolution in battle that ups the Pokemon's stats/abilities. At least that's what it seems.

Basically from what they have shown of mega pokemon it would kind of be like Giratina holding the griseous orb it changes its appearance gives it a new ability and or stat boosts.(This aint so much the same for Giratina but more of like a form change on the level of Deoxys.)
The only thing that seems to be a downside is that you basically give up your item slot for this form.
