Spector's been banging on about that for years. I'm glad he made Deus Ex because of it, but I think he's wrong about Thief. Sneaking is the game. Sure, in another game it might have been inappropriate but in Thief most of the excitement comes from trying not to be seen. Some bits are real tough to sneak through (so tough towards the end that I haven't completed it) but when you play the game you understand that sometimes it's acceptable to be seen briefly if it means guards will move somewhere different in search of you and that will in turn open up possibilities./>Some good words from Warren Spector about Thief.

I love Thief, particularly Thief 2. I should really reinstall it.

I think this is a really important point and one of the many reasons computer games are awesome. I remember being a kid and internalizing the maths behind each attack in pokemon and figuring out the most effective strategy in a fight. There is so much learning potential in computer games, and I don't just mean educational computer games. Give a class minecraft for a day and they'll understand a whole lot more than they would from reading a book or watching a tv show for a day./>it just occured to me that video games, and not conventional instruction, are what taught me how to use reason. when i played sonic the hedgehog for six hours a day, the spikes weren't spikes to me. they were representative of something i shouldnt jump on, or i'll die.

Definitely agree with you there. Maybe not necessarily Minecraft, but video games in general. I can't tell you how many words I learned to just spell, or read just from RPGs. I definitely wasn't a very strong reader before I started playing SNES RPGs, so that helped in a huge regard./>...
There's actually several products out there similar to that Brain Age thing that try to make learning game-like (I think they call it gameification, but that's stupid) and I think it's a great thing. Oh, that reminds me, I also learned touch-typing by means of some sort of game. Lots of video games helped me develop, and they also taught me that seems hardest at first, often leads to the best rewards.

The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.
