she sounds like she's not very scientifically minded. like she's just interested in it as a way to validate her existence to everyone else. has she ever taken a philosophy class? anyone who's the least bit good at smart knows philosophy.

If she does fail, remember you can always rub it smugly in her face.

My little sister has become an intolerable human being.

Even when I think I'm having a good conversation with her, she just becomes so utterly condescending. She's now an astronomy major and since switching her major, she acts and talks like she is an expert of all science ever and that no one deserves to speak about it in her presence without acknowldging her 'superior intellect'. She has even outright said that people who are not scientists (as if she's already one) should not dare try to comprehend the world around them, and that I'm 'just' an art major, so I shouldn't bother trying to compete on her level.

I generally try not to wish ill for other people just cuz they're being obnoxious, but I really, really hope she fails. It wouldn't be the first time she's suddenly decided she's going to be something and then act like a complete asshole about it, and she's already having weekly meltdowns because she's struggling to do her homework. At least then she'll finally shut up and quit trying to ruin one of my favorite subjects for me.

[/end vent]

I am 99% sure she will grow out of it. That statement comes from experience. Don't worry about it. She will one day feel guilty and have a hard time forgiving herself. It may take a few years before she gets to that point, nevertheless, it will come like an Italian in the night.

We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further!

Sense and rationality are pointless to use against stupidity. I, and about everyone in my family, have made that point to her, Lazlo, and she just... doesn't get it. Her response is basically 'they can try to learn science, but they'll never really understand it.' and if you try to argue against that, she pulls the 'well, I'm a science major, so of course you wouldn't agree. cuz you don't know.'

And I already do that, monkey. it's basically where this conversation started. She was talking about how she believe that whatever caused the universe to form is what she believes god to be (yes, this started with a talk about religion, rather than science, which makes this all the more confusing to me), and stated 'so, if anti matter caused the big bang, then I believe anti matter is god. If it was gravitation, then that's god.' and my replied 'well, I don't think it'd be gravitation... I might be wrong, but I think gravitation is more of a result than a cause of the big bang, but okay. I can understand that thought.' and then she started arguing that I don't know what gravity is, and setting me up for questions like 'ok, what keeps us in orbit' (which doesn't make sense in context? It's not like even remotely said gravity didn't exist). The more I think about it, I really don't have any clue what she was arguing in favor of. Every point she made really had nothing to do with the big bang, gravity or her religious beliefs. It really just sounded like she was just saying a bunch of science terms that sound like they could go together. Like a bitchy spam bot or something.

I hate this kind of attitude although it is surprisingly common amongst Physics students and it's just ridiculous. It sometimes annoys me when people who have never attempted to understand physics makes some stupid argument, but if they're actually trying to understand it then that's fantastic!

Besides, no one really knows everything (or else science would stop... and in fact nothing is fully understood yet, especially gravity). Also it's a totally meaningless thing to say that whatever "caused" the Big Bang is God (I'm not even sure this makes any sense to ask what the "cause" of the origin of the universe is), but yeah I agree show her some Carl Sagan/ Neil De Grasse Tyson videos!

Roger Ebert Died

Which is incredibly sad. I don't know if anyone outside of VP will agree with me though.

I really admired his hard work and writing, and it sucks that he died so suddenly. The other day he posted about a leave of absence because his cancer came back, but what he said was kind of optimistic. And now he's dead.

The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.

So, I'm curious. I suspect that this is pretty common amongst guys. You know that psychological complex where you're attracted to women that are super innocent/proper in public but are the opposite in a more private setting? That's common right? I thought it was called the madonna complex, but I looked that up and it was not what I was looking for.

I think that could  be considered a part of the Madonna-whore complex, except that it's really like 'the perfect woman' for some people with that complex. They will love and cherish a woman for being innocent, but they can still lust after her in the bedroom since she'll still be as debased and improper as they desire her to be. Since she'll only show this side to her significant other, she isn't a whore in the sense of someone who goes out and does this in public, which in the eye of the beholder would be bad. It'd be a best of both worlds scenario.

Of course, that may not sound like your text book version of the Madonna-whore complex, but with all things psychological, it can shift from person to person. Person A may desire what I mentioned above, while person B will put the 'Madonna' on a pedestal while shunning the 'whores' with a hatred that is (most likely) fueled by their own sexual desire. Person B wouldn't see the possiblity of the girl that's innocent in public and a whore in private, because, to them, the fact that she's a whore at all negates the first quality. So, it shifts and changes depending on the person.

Although you could argue that it has nothing to do with the complex at all, and that it's just a common fantasy to have the woman who completely lets go of restraint in bed. That isn't very rare at all, so I'd think that it just depends on how much emphasis and importance is placed on the roles. If it's more of a 'hey, it'd be hot if my girlfried did this...' then it's just more of a fantasy, but if heavy importance is placed on the roles, then I'd say it falls more in line with wanting a perfect girl because of a complex.

Personally i'm attracted to people that are generically  extroverted and a bit insane... even though i'm introverted and insane.. though i am in a bit of a dilemma at the moment.. some girl wants to start essentially a online relationship.. or a long distance one if you know actually ever meet each other that is.. the problem is i don't really like her that way.. in fact i'd say that she actually irritates me.. which is a feat in itself... apparently listening to people is an attractive trait... personally i thought it was more to do with not being a douche.. but meh.. either way... i don't like destroying people's expectations.

well if your not at all attracted to her then it would be cruel to lead her on.

also this is very common, whenever I see a girl acting really innocent but I see that "spark" in her eyes it sort of is and instant *walk over to her and introduce myself*type moment.

Is it just me or is Chrome's spellchecker horrible?

It doesn't get what I'm typing a lot of the time, and then I Google my misspelled word and get the answer. That doesn't make any why Chrome is of at least the same accuracy as just Googling (also, funnily enough, it doesn't think Googling is a word) it.

It's so you have to go to Google and look at the ads. But that just messes up my search history. Also the real worst spell check is the one in Google Drive, which tries to figure out if a word makes sense in a sentence but invariably keeps telling me "I'm" is spelled wrong.

So there's girl I've had a major crush on for the passed couple of years who all my friends call Crazy Marxist Chick. She was on my course through university and she had big red dreadlocks and was a vocal anarchist. I used to smoke joints with her after class until she got arrested for setting fire to an abandoned warehouse and was accussed of being an anarchist terrorist by the cops. She left the country for a while and so did I.

Today I was walking home and I hear some shouting and screaming coming from a house and out runs this shady looking guy persued by Crazy Marxist Chick. Without really thinking I rugby tackle the guy who is trying to run away and pin him down. Chaos ensues. I have no idea what's actually going on and the guy gets away from me but is backed into a corner. While I'm trying to figure out what's going on the guy gets away from me and runs off into the city minus his mobile phone and the shirt on his back. Crazy Marxist Chick storms back inside her house and slams the door and I'm left standing there like an idiot.

I walk off and call a friend before she comes back out to thank me. Turns out his friends had just robbed Crazy Marxist Chick of 20 grams of marijuana. She tells me to drop by hers anytime for a joint or a bong or whatever.

Really surreal. She was looking hot too.
