We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further!

sure is purdy. I wish I had a kindle. But do you ever look at it and think you've got water drops on it? Or maybe a scratch running diagonally below the moon?

What kind of things do you find yourself using your kindle for? Aside from reading ebooks.

/>smarts.

I mostly use it for reading web content, for which I think it is near perfect (Really any 7 inch tablet would work). The three main uses I have for the kindle fire are google reader (to catch up with the news), facebook (to catch up with people), and an app called Pocket, which used to be called Read It Later. I love this app, because you can save web content to read later, and it will automatically change it to a format that is easier to read. Sometimes, when I have my kindle next to my computer, I will save an article to Pocket and read it on my kindle simply because it is a more comfortable reading experience.

I rarely use my kindle for music (in spite of the music link on the top). And the only video I really watch on it is video podcasts. Even youtube and netflix are rare. It is even rarer that I will play games on it.

I've been thinking of getting some kind of tablet thingy for a while now. How do you find reading with the backlight? I'm never really sure how much of my not enjoying reading too much off computer screens is due to the actual strain on the eyes or has more to do with the fact that you tend to be huddled over a computer, which isn't as comfortable as holding what you're reading in your hands.

That app sounds very, very useful. I find I save so many pdfs to read later, but never get round to reading them because. Well reading pdfs generally sucks. If it can format them nicely that would probably help.

Did you have any problems hacking it or was it fairly straightforward?

If you get a tablet you should probably get a Nexus 7. It's cheap and Google is selling it for much cheaper than it should be with the kind of hardware it has (Aside from storage, which sucks)

Reading with the back light isn't so bad. if the room is well lit, it's easy to adjust the back light to match the ambient lighting. if the room is dark, there are free screen dimming apps that lower the brightness past the default lowest. not quite as nice as a book or regular kindle, but not bad at all.

I agree with monkey about just getting a nexus 7, but only of you buy new. i wouldn't be surprised if you could find a used kindle fire for cheap.

and hacking it was stupid easy thanks to people who are much smarter than I.

Just read an article about African chap with big plans to bring tablet computers to Africa claiming that most tablets are too expensive for local people. He's selling it for £225 ($350), The Nexus 7 costs £199 ($310) - I think this poor chap's plan might backfire.

I just realized that I hadn't posted in this thread since I got my new PC... Well anyway, it runs all the same stuff (And looks almost exactly the same), only difference being it's much faster. But without further adieu, here's my desktop:

Posted Image

Edit: In case anyone is wondering, the image is a cropped and rotated (And scaled) version of this ESO image of the Milky Way. If you want a copy I'd be happy to send it, but it's cropped exactly for my monitors, so it probably would be of use to anyone who doesn't have the same (admittedly silly) monitor setup.

Ah, similar to mine at least. 1920x1080 and 1280x1024 I think. Hooked it up to a cheap tv and had no reason not to use my old monitor alongside it.
