Considering we used to have an anime forum that was merged with the TV forum (which this one is now) I think maybe we should have a topic about it.

I used to really be an anime fan, obviously to anyone who knows me. But I really grew out of it. I never was against it. I still love Studio Ghibli (although if you don't you obviously can't appreciate nice things), Cowboy Bebop, and Detective Conan. Yet I really grew out of my like, love anime watch anime all the time phase. I don't think I'd like Negima so much if I watched it now. Space Dandy, despite being created by awesome people, I was immediately turned off on. Almost nothing coming out of Japan looks interesting to me...buuuuuut Attack on Titan really made me excited. Because that show is awesome. It really transcends its genre, like Cowboy Bebop does, although to a much lesser extent. Cowboy Bebop could easily have been a Western Show, which is obvious when you compare the similarities it shares with Firefly/Serenity which succeeded it (I'm not saying they're the same, but they share the same kind of aesthetics). I liken AOT to a better Fullmetal Alchemist, in that it doesn't have the ridiculousness that FMA has, and the annoying cliche junk anime does (sweat drops and falling down and ugh I can not stand that junk anymore).

Another show that I've been curious about for a while is Monster. Has anyone seen this? It sounds interesting, and is going to be remade for HBO by Del Toro and some Doctor Who writer.

Anyways, just talk about anime stuff here, whatever.

Oh, also, The Wind Rises comes out this month! woo~

I'd be interested in seeing the Japanese dub though. I mean, I really like Disney's dubs for Ghibli films, mostly, and this cast has some neat people like Mae Whitman (her?), Mandy Patinkin, Werner Herzog etc...but the main is voiced by Joesph Gordon Levitt, which seems odd to me, considering in Japan he was voiced by Hideaki Anno (aka, Evangelion creator) which sounds way more interesting to me.

I'm in a similar situation. I started watching way too much anime around my first semester of college. One of my suite mates turned me onto torrenting, and suddenly I stopped spending adequate time on schoolwork...and actually going to my classes for a while. <_<;

I've got a sizable collection of anime on my shelves, but I barely watch any of it these days. I recently went through Gurren Lagann again, but that's about it. I can't even remember the last time I watched a Ghibli film. =(

I do still actively read and collect manga. I keep having to clear other stuff off my shelves since I often run out of space for more manga.

I've got a list of anime that I've been meaning to check out for a good while now, but I haven't even tried looking any of them up. I did flip through a volume of Attack on Titan at work since I had heard nothing but praise for the anime. I'm sure it's really good, but it doesn't seem like something I would enjoy. (Then again, I love the heck out of Claymore, so who can say...)

Pardon my disjointed post. I'm hungry. *runs away to acquire food*

You should just watch/read Attack on Titan anyways. It's so good. I mean. Iono.

Bee hates anime and really loves AOT. She hates reading and actually started reading the manga. I think it's better than what one might initially think, as long as you're into a good story/action.

I found some scanlations, so I'm giving the manga a try. I'll go through at least the first volume and let you know what I think of it.

EDIT: ...So I'm just starting volume 3. 'Nuff said.

Thank god. I thought I was the only one who found Space Dandy to be garbage.

I haven't watched a good new anime lately. I mostly rewatch favorites (like Durarara!!) or update myself on ongoing mega-animes like One Piece and Naruto: Shippuden.

I couldn't even call myself much of an anime fan anymore, because put simply, there just aren't many new ones that appeal to me.

Well I only watched the first episode of Space Dandy, so maybe I'm being unfair to it? It actually got a respectable grade on AV Club. So I think I'll watch the first few episodes to see if it's even worth watching. I think maybe what's partly killing it for me is hype.

Have any of you watched Kill La Kill? I've heard good things, but I know very little about it.

I actually have a Crunchyroll subscription currently. Mainly because I forgot to cancel my 30 day trial, but whatevs. The only thing I use it for is to watch Saki.

*thumbs up*

I really think Attack on Titan's just so well done it can be easily appreciated even if it doesn't come off as "your thing" initially. I think I said in the watching topic I put it on for background noise while playing games one day, and realized it was subbed...I had no intention of actually watching the show, but by that night I was half way done just by how easily it hooks you (and it's really hard, because there's few obvious stopping points, you just have to keep going and going).

I actually bought the first three manga volumes with intention to read them. Probably will this weekend (and then buy 8 more...)

I've seen every episode so far, since I like to give things a chance, but I haven't liked ANY of the episodes yet. Completely turned off.

On this note, I liked the first season of Saki, and when I heard they turned on the Nationals Arc or whatever, I really wanted to watch it only to find you need a subscription :/

That is disappointing.

Is it because Space Dandy is not that good or not that good based off of what it should be?

I'm honestly not sure.

I probably expected too much out of it, so that's probably a part of it...

I don't really know, I'll have to try to watch it more objectively in the future (since I'm still trying to give it a chance since I WANT to like it.)

You should be able to watch it. Subscription users just get new episodes a week early. You should be able to watch the others though.

Oh wow, I didn't know that.

Could you do me a favor, and let me know when the season is over (if you get an idea of when it ends)?

I like to watch the whole season in one go, because I forget what happened in the previous episode sometimes. Watching the entire season at once makes for a more fluid experience.

I basically stopped caring about anime, too. I used to love it, but now it all just seems either boring, cliche or just downright bad. A lot of this I think is the typical anime stuff (like you said, sweatdrops, ect) though, that I have a reasonable tolerance to. What I really hate are characters who are obviously just a 'type' and nothing else (like tsundere), and just in general, bad writing- which just seems very, very common in most anime.

The last anime I watched was Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. That was when I was working on my animation final, since I work best with some kind of background noise (I prefer being in a room with people talking to me or to each other, but when I'm alone, I usually listen to shows instead). Though, this anime probably distracted me more than anything else. :p It's a bit different from the first series, not only in story (this follows the manga closely, rather than diverging) but, to me, it had less of the usual anime BS. And for what was still there, the infrequency of it made it more palatable.

I've been kind of meaning to watch Attack on Titan, though the fact that it'd be subbed is holding me back. I'll probably wait until it's dubbed to bother watching it, since I'd rather be able to work while I watched it.

Edit: Also, another thing I tend to dislike about anime: crappy art. Not just bad proportions, but bad character designing. If every female looks exactly the same, but with different hairstyles I can't stand it. It just feels like intense laziness to me. Like, if the artists don't care enough about their show to make the characters look different, why the heck should I? I can forgive it in some cases, like if the story is interesting enough to distract me from it or if the characters are obviously still their own people and not just 'types'.

I haven't really watched anime in a while. Every once in a while I look back at the boxsets that I own thinking 'Hey I should rewatch that' but either it never makes it off the shelf, or I get two episodes in and decide to go watch something else. The same goes for manga; I like leafing through my volumes sometimes to kill time but the desire to continue buying more (even the series that I want to finish collecting) is non-existent. The only time I get them is when I run across them for $1 or something.

I can't even remember the last anime I watched. It really is a travesty.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood was possibly the last anime I watched before Persona 4: Animation (which sucked and I was only watching because of Persona) and Attack on Titan. I might have watched Yu Yu Hakusho (which I enjoyed a lot, never saw the whole thing before), Love Hina (which meh), and DBZ Kai (Which is DBZ so whatever)...but it has been so long who knows anymore (and I watched Cowboy Bebop and Case Closed but those do not count). It was a long time before Brotherhood too, I only watched it because I really did enjoy the original anime.

I enjoyed Brotherhood, but of course, it is plagued with stuff I hate. But it's still a really strong story and pretty fun, especially as the show progresses. The beginning is a little weak because it does have a bit more of the annoying stuff, and as a fan of the original anime everything felt like a retread. But the latter half of that show is like miles beyond the beginning or the original anime. I remember liking it a lot, and hating to have to wait for the next batch of episodes. I've been thinking of trying to get Bee into it, since she liked AOT, but there's just a little too much of that animeish stuff that turns her off (and me too now, although I'm far more tolerant on it). I wish it picked up steam sooner, I showed her the episode with Nina/Tucker and she seemed to generally like it...so maybe one day.

But yeah, Puffin, you should watch Attack on Titan. I think it has a pretty great art-style too, something I don't see many animes have. Well, if you can ignore how ridiculous the Titans look most of the time.

Also, Monster. So nobody answered my question originally so I assume no one has seen it. It is very very good. This is exactly the kind of anime I enjoy, because I feel like it transcends what it is (like Cowboy Bebop is). It's just a really good psychological thriller. My only only problem with it so far is it's pretty long (74 episodes) and some of the episodes so far feel like filler. Yet I kind of trust the show enough that it isn't wasting my time. It's really early and it amazes me that the show will be able to stretch itself to 74 episodes (and from all accounts I've read, still be good). It's pretty great. I'm really interested in seeing Del Toro's adaption, I think it could really be a pretty big show (kind of like Dexter, except it doesn't get shitty).

Some of the titans are pretty ridiculous, yeah. Although that just kind of makes them more horrifying.

AOT reminds me just a bit of Claymore, both the themes and some of the art. Though it's plenty different enough that it doesn't feel like anything was copied.

Actually, to any of you who enjoy AOT, I would like to recommend Claymore. The manga is one of my favorites, and the anime is very well done (setting aside one particular musical cue that always feels out of place every time I hear it). One of my friends who doesn't even like anime watched the whole series in a few days once I got him started on it.

EDIT: I went to check how many volumes-worth of AOT I've gotten through, and I noticed that I'm almost finished with everything that's been written so far. =(

(More concretely, I'm most of the way through volume 12 right now.)
