this show is ridiculous. i knew rv was getting the old 1-2 the second i saw him. he was immedietaly too cool for his own good so of course he had to use a spear and prance around like a fairy. doesn't jason vorhees over there know what a horizontal cut is?

A horizontal cut would have been easier to dodge, Oberyn would have just jumped backwards and then probably stabbed the mountain while he was trying to stop his momentum- which, with that long of a sword would have taken longer for him to recover from.

Seriously Oberyn was a total badass, the only reason he died was he got careless in his rage. He was instantly amazing so I should have figured he would die, but I was wishing for his safe victory over the mountain. I have been in shock all week since watching.

there's an episode of Deadliest Warrior where William Wallace has a huge bastard sword edit: claymore that was swung laterally, and Shaka Zulu didn't stand a chance with his spear. swinging that with one hand would be nothing to even a 400lb man, much less a 400kg man who's somehow 8ft tall. it just sucks they made such a neat character just to feed him to the mountain.

Tyrion can live, our better yet the mountain dies, they still insist on killing Tyrion but then someone brings up that they have to kill Circie too,.and they actually do.

The only person I REALLY want to live is Arya! I would like Sansa to live too, but mostly Arya. It's not like I don't care about other characters, it's just too emotionally exhausting watching the people I like die...

This episode was pretty awesome, buuuuuuuuut I don't think I care much for it. I doubt I could watch it again, it's just not all that interesting (like Blackwater was).

 

It was super cool though. Just...I really do not care about the Night's Watch, and the really redeeming awesome things that could have happened in this episode didn't.

 

Now that Jon's story is going to spread out until next week, and it seems like Bran/Dany are going to be in the episode next week...next week is going to be jam packed with stuff. Which is a bit disappointing. I feel like Jon/Night Watch's story would have been better to end this week. There's a lot you could cut out and still be interesting, but I guess they wanted to mimic Blackwater.

Also, the whole Ygritte dying thing. I knew, but I don't think Bee knew, and neither of us really cared. Their relationship was brief to begin with, and it's been so long since they even shared screen time I didn't really care. And the fact that that was the climax when other things could be is just ugh.

 

So awesome, but, slightly disappointed.

When I read the books, Ygritte dying was absolutely terrible. Like, by that point I basically had this attitude of 'ehhh, whatevs' towards all of the deaths, but hers upset me despite that. But here...eh. It's not that I saw it coming. I saw it coming in the book, too, (Jon's story isn't hard to really figure out: There's a wildling army so duh, they're going to attack the wall. The night's watch is the outnumbered underdog who just barely pulls through and, of course, Ygritte will die in the battle because Jon's not supposed to love and it'll be tragic.) but here it just kind of had no impact.

In the book, after Jon leaves the wildlings and returns to castle black, you see and hear nothing of Ygritte until the end of the battle. Which, I think kind of works better. Like I said, Jon's story is pretty darned simplistic at this point, so taking her out entirely makes you forget about her, so you're not thinking 'yyyep, she's gonna die' every time you see her. It doesn't take away the surprise of it entirely, but it does make it feel sudden and out of nowhere.

Here you get several episodes where we see her with the wildlings runnin' around killin' people. Which doesn't exactly make us like her any more, even if she claims to have legitimate motive, but even more so, I think it makes it easier to forget the screen time she and Jon did share. It puts a different, fresher idea in our heads of who Ygritte is, instead of thinking of her as the clever, tempestuous lover.

Granted, I can see why they handled her character the way they did- and more than likely, that is just to make sure people didn't forget her entirely. Though I'm not sure if constantly reminding us was really necessary either. The only other female character up at the wall would be Gillie and they look and act entirely different, so you'd think the average audience would be able to remember who she was. But, eh, maybe not.

 

 

As a side note: I don't know why both Alliser Thorne and Jon decide to leave the wall and fight on the ground when they discover wildlings broke in. Like, if they were actually doing some commanding there to deal with the threat, I could understand, but they just jump into the fray. Wouldn't it be smarter to stay on the wall, where you can command, but send a couple of the archers down to the deal with the threat- instead of going down themselves to, basically, just kill a guy or two, while simply hoping that the guy you left in your place is competent enough to deal with the main host of the wildling army?

In Thorne's case it makes sense, you kind of get the idea that he's more comfortable being in the thick of the fighting than ordering archers around on the wall, and he leaves someone he trusts to do a good job (even if it was misplaced trust). In Jon's case he's doing this cuz... it looks more interesting. That's basically it. I don't even know who he left in charge, I think it's one of his friends, but I'm not sure? Either way, with the exception of Sam, none of his close friends are really exceptionally good at anything other than being a soldier, so it doesn't make sense why he wouldn't send the guy in his stead.

It was probably the best finale out of all of the finales but I don't know how much I cared for the episode except:

Hound vs Brienne was awesome.

 

 

But I was excited to see Lady Stoneheart (not because she does much, but because I want to see others reactions and see how the show does it), especially after Lena Headey was trolling people on Instagram about it. If they would have either pushed Jon Snow stuff to last week or didn't push Bran's story ahead already I assume they could have put it in. The show is in a weird spot in relation to the books now, I guess.

 

Which probably is for the best. The show is just completely breaking canon next season so it should be interesting.

I liked this episode. It has it's problems, but I enjoyed it. Though, I'm not sure if I'd say it was pulled off better than Blackwater. I'd probably have to watch that episode more recently to really decide.

And that was a pretty awesome custody battle between Brienne and Sandor. ...Even if I find Brienne's yelling to be really grating.

 

Also, is it just me or does the killing of major characters in GoT sometimes seems sort of... pointless? I know that probably sounds stupid this far into the series (like, seriously, how many people have died?) but I think we can all agree that major characters who die, even fairly new ones, tend to die for a reason. For example, Oberyn dies because, otherwise, Tyrion would have been deemed not guilty and thus wouldn't be shipped off to the free cities. The characters deaths have an impact on the plot (whether it's the overarching plot or just one other major character's own personal growth).

 

Aaaand Jojen's death was pretty dumb. He's stabbed and disposed of so quickly that as soon as the others run to the cave, you basically forget about it as you see the interior with all the weirwood roots and the three eyed crow. It doesn't really serve an emotional purpose to the viewer, because there's clearly more important things going on to distract from the shock of it, so it just seems like a throwaway death. And considering he doesn't actually die (at this point, anyway, I haven't read that far into book 5, but I don't think he does as of yet), I don't really get why they'd bother other than shock value. Though that probably is the only reason. GoT is, after all, widely for it's character death count, so hey, why not throw a few more in, just to get people riled up?

 

I just hope that next season, they tone it down with the death and gore. Not because it bothers me, but because I don't want it to get to that point where it feels like they're just being gratuitous for only the sake of shock value.

 

Though, despite that, I liked the episode. I thought Jon Snow sort-of-not-really attempting to murder Mance was entertaining in a dumb way. He was just so obvious. Like really, dude, you wanna twitch a little more as you glance at the knife? Though I'm surprised there was so little dialogue with Tyrion's scenes. It's like the writers had no clue Tysha ever existed or that Tyrion had ever mentioned her in the course of the show. As I was watching it, I just had this slight feeling of 'wait, this is missing something...' but couldn't place why, but now, after the episode, I have to admit it kinda bothers me slightly. Though, maybe it's for the best. Tyrion's kind of tiring in the 5th book, maybe not having him ask "where do whores go?" will be an improvement on his story arc.

 

While they may have accomplished everything somewhat differently from the books, it doesn't really look like they're set to break from canon completely. Everyone is basically in their positions to just continue as they would in books four and five unhindered by any of the changes.

And that's even with Jojen's death since.. well, he doesn't do much after book three.

And I'm going to stop this post before it gets any more longwinded... oy vey, am I bad at that.
