Seriously good episode. The whole season has actually been better than I expected, though I'm still not sure where it's headed. It doesn't actually feel like much has happened, but it's been enjoyable all the same.

It's Memorial Day here, and apparently last year ratings dropped over Memorial Day so they didn't want to air it. Which sucks since this episode is going to be crazy.

 

I also think it may have been because of Arrested Development as well.

I deliberately avoided this topic all day waiting for Spaz to come home so we could watch this. I kind of knew some of the end results, but had no idea this was how it would happen. Jesus...

 

Maybe it's naivety, but I keep hoping for some sort of happy ending to this story. I know it doesn't get any better from here, but god do I ever want there to be at least some glimmer of hope.

I can't decide how I feel about this latest episode. I've been looking forward to this part since I read the books, because, while I didn't neccesarily enjoy this part, it was really well written. There are, of course, some changes made between the books and the show, which at first confused me (since they are largely unneccesary), but I could get why they made them after I thought about it for a little while. How it played out wasn't bad or even disappointing, it just feels like it fell just slightly short. I can't decide if it's just because it didn't play out as it had in my head when I was reading or if it's actually the fault of the show. It may just be that I can't let this one thing go.

 

I'll elaborate below, so, yknow, if anyone hasn't seen this episode yet, avoid this spoiler and all that, since I can't really be all that vague with the nature of what I'm about to complain about (and as such, I'm probably not going to try very hard).

The wife wasn't in this scene in the books. I was kind of confused since her reason for being absent was pretty sensible. Then I remembered she's pregnant in the show and death seemed seemed unavoidable (if it wasn't already). Stabbing her in the belly to make sure her baby died was equally unsurprising (which was entirely unneccesary, the baby would be just as dead no matter how they killed her since it's not like she was far enough along for the baby to be delivered and survive). I undertstand changing it so she's present and killed off, as opposed to just fading off into the background, since the character has a bigger role in the show than the books and it seems a fitting end. But making her pregnant and then having her share the name she's planned for the baby with her beloved (which of course has an intense amount of meaning for him) shortly before she's killed in a gruesome and predictable way just seems like a clumsy sympathy ploy to me. Which is exceedingly unneccesary considering the outcome of this part. They don't need anymore sympathy, they have it in truck loads already.

I think it was specifically to shut up all the fan theories about her equivalent character being pregnant with Robb's heir (because now it no longer matters even if she is in the book) and to make the scene different than in the book to shock the people who knew it was coming. You only say this is unsurprising and predictable since you knew it was going to happen...but for anyone who didn't know it's a huge shock. Heck, I knew, and the whole stabbing her in the stomach was gruesome and surprising as fuck to me, since I knew she wasn't supposed to die.

 

So far you're the only person I've talked to who feels that way.

I can see that, but my point was that her being pregnant, and playing up her pregnancy just before her death and killing her via gut stabbing, were all unneccesary. They were shocking, but that is the point. It was meant simply to shock and then earn more sympathy from the viewer as a result. If they wanted to crush fan speculation of her carrying Robb's heir, all they had to do was kill her off. period. And like I said, her dying in and of itself isn't a bad thing, I thought it was a more fitting end than just having the character shoved out of the way and forgotten. Heck, her being pregnant and dying isn't a bad thing, if it was just carried out a little more tactfully. But the way it was done was very obvious in its intentions. It's like the writers went 'hey... what if we showed that Talisa was pregnant before the red wedding, and then later shocked everyone by killing her off? Oh, but just killing her off quickly on its own won't be nearly shocking enough, so let's first make sure the audience begins to sympathize with her and Robb early on, by having her sweetly suggest the baby be named after his father, then, to disgust them, we'll have her stabbed repeatedly in the womb, just so they know the baby is dead long before she is. Near the end of the scene, when Robb is stumbling toward her body, we'll remind them of what could have been and who else he's already grieving for by having him place his hand on her bloody belly. It will be so dramatic.'

Essentially, if I felt like they hadn't made her pregant for the sole purpose of intending to shock and disgust the audience, then I would have found it to be better. But that really was the only reason. To shock, to make us hate Frey and Bolton all the more and to feel even worse for the characters as a result. Even if they had concealed this attempt a bit more I would be ok with it, but they really weren't even trying.

Granted, that said, I don't think it's so bad that it ruins the episode or anything. I do still feel the scene was held back just a little bit, but that may just be me.

As someone who hasn't read the books, I genuinely believed that Rob Stark was going to continue being a main character for quite a while and that at some point he would attack Casterley Rock (sp?). During the whole Red Wedding scene, it was obvious something suspicious was up, but I did not see the chick getting killed, or anyone getting killed really. I think knowing that the chick was pregnant and that Rob planned to attack Casterley Rock blinded me to the fact that they were about to get killed. Otherwise I would have seen it a mile coming, but instead I was all like "nah, they've still got lots of plot in those characters to work through". I should have known something was up when Arya got so close to them.

That's basically how I felt when I read the scene, so I'm not surprised you were surprised. The TV show is very good at capturing the feeling of a scene even if they change stuff, so I'm not at all arguing against that. Actually, with the book in retrospect, I felt even dumber for not realizing it was a trap because there was no continuation presented for Robb like they gave you with the Casterly Rock thing. It was just 'welp, gotta go apologize to Frey, this is gonna suck...' for those characters with very little planning of what they were going to do next (except for some characters suggesting they go back to Winterfell, but Robb himself disagreed with that, so I never held much stock in it). So when Robb and Catelyn did die, there was that small part of me that went 'how did I not see that coming? I should have known they would never reunite or that Frey would actually forgive them...' D: (though that didn't stop me from flipping through the entire book to make sure there wasn't just one more chapter for Catelyn)

Also, Monkey, I see now that what I said previously would be misleading. When I said I was unsurprised by Talisa's death and how she died, I didn't neccesarily mean that was the fault of the show. I can see how her death, in general, would still be surprising to either the average viewer or reader. I guess what I was saying was that it was unsurprising to me in specific, because I am a cynical bastard. I knew what the Red Wedding meant already, so that obviously gave me a tip off, but on top of that my perspective was along the lines of: 'Well, most TV shows might avoid hurting or killing a pregnant woman, but this is Game of Thrones and Game of Thrones don't give a fuck.' So while I was shocked that they still went through with it, I wasn't really surprised in the end. Again though, that's with outside information and my own cynical nature, so I'm not saying that was the fault of the show. More so, what I was really trying to convey was that they could have handled the nature of her death better and or at least hid their intentions better. Having her be pregnant and  killing her in such a gruesome way for the sole intention of getting a reaction was badly handled in my opinion.
