OK, let's start with the tl;dr version - Windows 10 sucks, and because of it, I am in search of a new anti-virus for the first time in like six years.

Now, for the longer version:

So let's go back to about a month ago. I was at work, like I do, because I am a responsible adult with obligations.

I come home, and bam, without my consent, Windows just decided, hey you have Windows 10 now. This in itself wasn't horrible, but then I learned Symantec had to be uninstalled, because it wasn't compatible. Welp! There goes my reliable anti-virus that I paid nothing for!

So, I decided, damn I don't trust Windows Defender because it's probably garbage like Windows 10.

I do research on the net and hastily decide BitDefender works!

It does! Huzzah. BitDefender was a good friend. It didn't allow viruses from what I saw, and it didn't cause problems like annoying me with scareware. Then, all of a sudden, it changes

I WANT YOUR EMAIL!

no bitdefender no

I thought it would go away, but it kept pestering me while I was watching youtube videos, which tbh, is the final straw. I uninstalled a reliable but annoying anti-virus because it would't stop asking for something I wouldn't give. I was told to just give it a fake email by customer support, which is sketchy, but whatever.

So I made the fake email "stop@pissoff.com" and it just continued (this is when I uninstalled BitDefender).

Now I have just Windows Defender, and I feel naked.

I need the following to be met with a new anti-virus:

1. I need it to be free - I'm going to be paying for Norton or Kaspersky or something once I get my new laptop in a few months (so fucking rad too).

2. I need it to be something simple. I don't want to have to play with it for hours to fine tune it. I just want it to sit there, autoscan my million files, and delete viruses when the need arises.

3. I need it to be non-obstructive. I didn't think this would be an issue with BitDefender, but I want to watch fucking Youtube you bastards.

Most importantly is the free thing. I'm not paying for anti-virus for this PoS. I will for my new laptop, because I'll care more about that.

Believe it or not, windows defender is fine. And so is windows 10. Yeah, the forced upgrade policy is pretty awful, but windows 10 as a whole isn't so bad. It's also going to receive security updates longer than 7 or 8. But I can understand why some people didn't want to upgrade.

Do you regularly have issues with viruses? I haven't used a virus scanner, other than the ones microsoft provides, in years...

The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.

That's the thing.

I don't know if I have problems with viruses, because for six years, I had Symantec, which got rid of any virus I could have possibly gotten without me knowing about it.

I wouldn't know if I had a virus to begin with, because, at its core, I've never experienced one.

The only time in the past several years I've had a problem with a virus, it was my own fault for letting it trick me into downloading the thing myself. Other than that, TrendMicro scans my computer daily and at most might tell me it deleted a single shady looking cookie or something. Also I use TrendMicro, but I pay for it, and I think their free version is time-limited.

Alright...

1 Free

2 Simple

3 Good

You can pick two.

Otherwise, Windows Defender is great.

Alright, well free is the most important, and good is probably second.

I'm unlikely to really need the advice though because I'm probably putting Kaspersky or Norton on my new computer that I bought earlier today. (It'll get here by Tuesday apparently).

And thus, I probably won't need anti-virus for this piece of shit.

Whatever you do, don't put Norton on it. It will grind you to a halt.

I just use Windows Defender. Norton was automatically put on the computer upon purchase, so I mean, it's there too.

It hasn't actually done anything so I'm not really looking to remove it yet. If it bothers me, I will.
