It has always been a thing for people who spend alot of time by their computer to have the best suited gear for the purpose.

A craft that has been diluted through the generations and the more common use of computers.

Most of todays users spend an average of 3 hours / day at a computer, most of this time is spent on social media and research.

Then we have us, the sad group that spends more time in front of the computer then in bed. (no not a bad thing)

Most of us still hold the tradition of the importance of the gear we use, we tend to be more exact when we buy our hardware, both internal and external computer components. This is very true both for generic geeks and developers as well as for gamers, and most of us here fall in the catagory of both.

So then, on to the subject. Do you concider yourself dependant on your hardware. How important is the architecture of your graphics card, the brand on your CPU or motherboard?

Personally I'm very dependant on my gear.

I have always been a very big fan of the AMD and previously ATI components, both for the CPU and the GFX adapter.

Running on a Radeon R9 290 8GB card from Sapphire.

I also have a more then healthy view on monitors, I have 2 monitors and will likly never go back to just 1. they have to be the same model and connected to the same cable type, currently running both on display port, the reason for this is that it's important that colors and brightness do not differ between my monitors.

Then we're down to the more external parts.

I have a very big hand and I use the palm grip (though somwhat likness to the claw since yea... big hands) so the mouse needs to be suited for both, Currently using a Mionix NAOS 7000, and before that I had the Mionix Saiph 3200, and earlier I had the Logitech MX5xx series since the dawn of the model.

I just recently made a descission to get a new gaming chair since my last one did not survive the move to the new appartment, this time I will go for the DxRacer King Series KF06

Am I overly dependant on my gear or am I just very comfortable in my geekyness and I feel that I should not settle for less then what is optimal?

or is this something I share with the rest of you?

I don't feel dependent on my gear, for PC or for my phone, or for any particular thing. I love PC gaming, and gadgets in general, but I also try to adapt to new things quickly.

I do have "preferred brands" when I buy PC components (EVGA and Logitech have served me well for several years), but again, I don't feel beholden to any one company. Before I buy anything, I try to do research to see if it will be what I want.

The only thing I've been doing recently that might fall under this is that I have been moving to all cordless components, with the most recent purchase being a Logitech G930 gaming headset. It's working well so far, though I wish the battery life were better. Once the steam controller is released, I will have that as a cordless component as well (And not a moment too soon, since my 7+year old wired XBox 360 controller just died on me...).

I think my adaptability comes from usually not having the disposable income to buy what ever I want, not that I'm saying you do. So I have to be both extremely choosy with my purchases, and those purchases come infrequently. I try to make due with what I have.

The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.

My view is similar to VP's. I have some preferred brands in mind when I look for gadgets and components, but I always look at what my options are before making a purchase, and my final pick might not be one of those brands.

Samesies. I don't have any dependency on any brand. I just want what's best for my buck.

Although I do have tendencies for my phones to be Samsungs and my computer peripherals to be Logitech.  But saying that, my last phone was an LG and my current keyboard is a Razer.

It's not so much the brands when it comes to the external components. it's more that when I go buy a new mouse, I need it to have a good overall review, the specifications needs to be clear on the DPI, but it really mostly comes down to 1 thing, How does the mouse fit my hand, will I be able to controll it comfortably.

Mice are one of the things I'm not that picky about. If it's inexpensive and fits comfortably in my hand, that's enough. I had a fancy gaming mouse by Razor once. It was great until the contact under the left button got so sensitive it double clicked everything, and then I was sad. If my $17 Logitech does that, it's not a big deal to replace.

By contrast, I rather like my fancy wireless keyboard with proximity sensors that light up the keys when my hand is close, and I will probably look for a similar one whenever this thing needs to be replaced.

I guess it depends. I'm not very dependent on what's inside of my computer, although I have brands I prefer. I only buy G.SKILL RAM and SSDs because I've seen people on Newegg complain that they didn't last long enough, and G.SKILL opened a ticket for them and told them to get in contact for an RMA. That's pretty good customer service, and although I've never had to use it, I know it's there and so G.SKILL is now my brand. Plus they're pretty inexpensive. I prefer AMD components, and Sapphire at that, but really, that's more of a cost thing. I'm thinking of going back to the dark side (Intel) anyway, since AMD's linux support is shit.

There is one thing, though. I used to have a Logitech MX Revolution mouse, and the day the left-click spring lost it's tension, I cried. Those of you who have never used one probably won't understand, but that is the most comfortable mouse that ever has been, ever will be produced. And this isn't just my opinion, people sell them new for $400. Even the used ones still cost 60-80. I was dependent on that mouse, and I still consider getting a soldering iron and replacing the whole switch assembly, since the spring is no longer functional, and you can't just buy replacements.

It's somewhat the same with the Logitech UltraX flat keyboard, they stopped making them and the internet is still going craze descussing a worthy successor, but nothing has come close to the comfort, silence and layout that the UltraX had, I went through 3 of them while they were still in production, started from the old PS2 connector up to the USB ones

It's all the same to me. Just so long as my keyboard has one of those nipples I can caress in times of uncertainty.

Those nipples are my favorite, and except for my Surface, I won't buy a laptop without it.
