So I just noticed this new forum popped up. :D:

A few months ago I picked up a Dell PowerEdge for $100 off craigslist. It is currently running Apache/PHP/MySQL and humming away in my closet. If any of you need a small host with reasonably good uptime, or just FTP access to store some files, do let me know.

The connection speed/system specs are ideal for a small-end website. If you're trying to host something that gets a million hits a day you'll probably slaughter my bandwidth. :eye:
I can do custom domains if you've purchased one (usually run about $10 a year), or I can give you a subdomain on alcuria.net (e.g., http://yourname.alcuria.net) for free.

RAM: 4GB
CPU: 2 GHz Quad-core CPU
OS: Windows 7 Pro (lol)
Connection Speed: 50mbps down/10mbps up (if I recall...)

(I will get the php/mysql/apache version number when I get home.)

Jesus asterisk Christ I wish I had that much upload speed.

Where do you live? San Francisco or the Bay Area?

Because my family who live in Castro Valley/San Leandro have worse internet connections that me. I'm just wondering who provides such beautiful internet (unless it's one of the really expensive Comcast options that are too expensive for me)

Let me double-check the upload speed. I am probably off.

We are using the second-to-top-tier XFINITY Comcast internet. I don't know how much it costs but it's sort of a lot. (I recommend Astound if you're in their area.)

But I'm in Dublin!

Window 7? Isn't there an actual server edition newer than 2008?

(I know there's a BSD newer than that)

I'll probably put ubuntu server edition on it eventually. When I started using it all I had on-hand was a copy of windows 7.

What are your thoughts on maybe hosting retro of the week? I host it from home currently, which is becoming a hassle.

We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further!

Windows Server 2008 R2 is the most stable and reliable server version wir a windows server.

However Windows Server 2012 is getting better, it utilizes more of a command line interface though powershell for most of it's interaction.

Microsoft finnaly learned something from the Linux/Unix world...

And the speed looks nice.
Sadly I can't host storage myself since my GF keeps turning of the servers.

But if I manage to sneak a server in somewhere I will let you know.

Working on getting 1Gbit uplink (both directions with Full Duplex) in my building :D

I never really got the PowerShell, it just seemed totally crippled and worthless.

Powershell is awsome once you understand how it works.
I write most my scripts for windows environment in PS nowadays.

anything from Database updates, backups etc.

Then you can just schedual them with the builtin shedualmanager in windows.

This is good to know. I currently run my own webserver but I have limited bandwidth.

Are you still running your webserver, dhm? I might need to host some files there at some point.

Hey all -- it's still up. I don't know how I missed the replies to this thread. Only thing is comcast has been a bit of a drag, so I reset our router at least once a day. Other than that, uptime has been great and speed is... acceptable I think. If I'm torrenting or something things may slow down. :)
