The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.

Deus Ex was completely a response to Thief. I remember sitting in meeting after meeting with the team, arguing that it was a bad idea to de-power players to force them to sneak and avoid combat. “What if I’m not good enough to sneak past a guard? Or I just want to bash a guy over the head once in a while?” I lost all those battles (and, the way Thief turned out, I was clearly in the wrong — the game rocked). However, those lost battles led me to a place where all I could think was, “I’ll show those guys. I’ll make a game where you can sneak, fight or talk your way past any problem.” The next four years were just details — the game was born out of intense frustration with Thief.

When I watched the interview that the original post is about, I remember getting the impression that Spector has kind of... moved on. Or maybe, he figured that his influence on the industry was over, but had nothing but optimism for the future of gaming.

Yeah, I definitely get that impression too. I think maybe he's just satisfied that his work is done with games and doesn't feel he could really add anything new. I'm sure the prospect of pottering around Disney contributing to random projects that take his fancy doesn't soundn't all too bad to him at this stage./>When I watched the interview that the original post is about, I remember getting the impression that Spector has kind of... moved on. Warren Spector seems to have been fired from Disney./>Hopefully after he's done living the wet dream of his college years, we'll see what you're hoping for.

Man, I got the impression the guy loved that company. Seems like kinda a shitty break for him.

"Warren Spector is a Twat"
Which I feel is disrespectful.
Anyways, that is disappointing news.

Didn’t Warren mention several times that he’s too old to still be making games? It felt that he’s been hinting that he wants to retire and this seems like a golden opportunity. I sure as hell hope he at least makes one more good game though. Call me crazy but maybe even assemble a small team and do a kickstarter for a low-fi/budget game, but one that’s deep and complex in the vein of Deus Ex? I’m sure people would literally throw money at him
Saw that posted somewhere else and thought it made some interesting points. I'll be keeping an eye out for word from the man himself.
What a shame.

So apparently Warren Spector was interviewed over at rock, paper, shotgun and I missed it.
He says some pretty interesting stuff. Says he's not done with games and that he wants go indie. He even mentions wanting to make more procedural and simulated games. This is exactly the direction I wanted him to take when he left Ion Storm. I'm really excited.
