I've never read the graphic novels...despite being curious about them.

This movie just looks amazing though. Directed by Edgar Wright? Staring Micheal Cera and Jason Schwartzman? The music supervisor is Nigel Godrich? Beck is writing music for it? Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino are really into it?

There is no doubt in my mind this movie won't be great. The whole awesome unique comic book/2D video game esque visual style of the trailer is just. AHHH.

More people need to reply to this. I almost feel bad for triple posting.

I was browsing Borders this afternoon and saw a small display table dedicated to the graphic novels. I almost bought some, but they were 12 bucks a pop, so I'll probably read a bit of them online first to see what I think. Oddly enough, I think I had seen this display several times before and just never payed any attention to it since I had never heard of the series.

EDIT: Ha! They had a scene with a second Scott character, and they called him Other Scott.

I have to say, this looks really cool. I have to see this. I love all the comic book style words thrown in there.

Oh my god, that's Ann! I seriously hope they kind of make at least one little nod to the fact George Micheal is going to fight his ex Ann Veal in this movie.

^hehheh

So after actually reading the first novel, I'm kind of angry Michael Cera is the lead.

I mean, okay, Cera does kind of look like Scott. And Scott does have extremely awkward moments, but he's far more confident than the usual character Cera plays, and it kind of plays into the charm that is Scott Pilgrim. I have confidence that Michael Cera COULD act like how I expect Scott to, I just don't believe that is what is happening based on what I see in the trailers. I see George Michael/Evan/Paulie Bleeker/Nick Twisp(or O'Leary). But it's not like Cera couldn't pull it off, I guess I should really reserve judgement for until the movie actually comes out.

I have only read the first book in the series but I'll get to finish the rest once school starts. Why you ask? Because our ACM room has the complete set which everyone reads from time to time. I actually tried to sneak back into the building this summer so I could keep reading, but they locked my door code out. Lame.

I'm pretty excited about this coming out. It looks like they've really got a lot of elements down and are keeping to the feel. I read in an interview that they worked with the author and there are bits where they don't keep to the story, but they keep to the feeling. I expect tweaks that are there to make the movie work for itself. I'm with Monkey on Cera though. He does seem to be missing bits of what makes Scott a great character. I don't see him being the confident Scott like in fights and however Cera portrays that, I think it's going to be a completely different feel. Hopefully it will still be a good feeling.

I don't ever look forward to anything that comes out, and I hate seeing movies in the theater. HOWEVER, I'm suuuuper excited for this movie and Lazlo said he'd take us out to watch it in the theater, which for some reason excites me greatly also. I can't wait. <3

To the greatest signature in the world! All right! It was the greatest signature in the world all right.

And the peculiar thing is this, my friends. The signature I made on that fateful night didn't actually look anything like this signature! This is just a tribute. You've gotta believe me, and I wish you were there. Just a matter of opinion. I'm a bit torn about what to do about seeing the movie. I have not had a chance to finish reading the books because the collection I read owned by the ACM club. Problem with that is the books are locked up in their room in a building that is closed until school starts. So I wouldn't be able to feasibly read the rest of the books until the first week of September at the earliest. By that time I don't know if it will still be in theaters (I have no idea how long movies run).

Should I:
A) See the movie and finish reading the books later

B) Read the books first and hope the movie is still in theaters

Movies run based on how popular they are. I assume Scott Pilgrim will run a month or two. Buuuuuuuuut...I don't think you really will have to read the books to get this movie, especially considering how much they're supposed to diverge at the end.

So A.

Okay, here is my opinion on this movie. I'm not sure if it'll get too spoilery...but...be aware it may.

I LOVED THE MOVIE. I absolutely cherished it and I can't wait to own it and IT HONESTLY REALLY MAKES ME HOPE MORE GETS DONE WITH THE SCOTT PILGRIM LICENSE. I think all the actors did well, even Micheal Cera. Maybe he wasn't as cocky as I would have wished, but still, he did well with the roll. Edgar Wright did a masterful job with this movie. All of the action and CG is so beautiful, it really makes you wish more movies went that route.
My problem is...it's not a very good movie. I mean, granted, I could see it being enjoyable to a lot of people...but besides that...the story kind of falls flat. The whole relationship between Ramona and Scott is really...just there. There's no provocation for it. There really wasn't one in the original story, but it was far more fleshed out and it felt like they did have feelings for each other. The movie just makes it feel like Scott is just infatuated and Ramona is kind of a bitch. In fact, no relationship is really well established in this movie, like it was in the original stories. Which is something I feel really takes away from the whole charm of what it could be. The best relationships on screen seem to be between Scott and Knives and Wallace. Which is really bad when it comes to really wanting Scott to be with Ramona. The movie kind of really makes you want Scott and Knives to hook up instead, and just generally makes you feel horrible for Knives. I must admit I felt the same in the graphic novels, about Knives (and she's my favorite character, by far), but in the graphic novels it also felt right that Ramona and Scott were together. In this movie it's just..."okay, fine, whatever". Plus, the secondary characters are a big part of the original story, and don't get played out very well in the movie.
And I know BLAH BLAH BLAH original. BUT the movie's writing is just really kind of shallow and really doesn't flesh out any of the characters or relationships all that well. So when things happen to say, Scott, or between him and Ramona, it's just really like...what does it matter?

I feel like this movie is great for fans, though. Because fans really don't need anything fleshed out for them. They can put the pieces together themselves. So it's enjoyable to watch all these characters you already know so well go off on this newish story. AND I do really kind of like the last act of this movie more than I do the last act of the original story. Although the last act of the movie kind of just is a cop out, it's a bit more entertaining.

Buuuuuuut despite its faults, I think anyone could sit through the movie and maybe enjoy it to an extent. Far more so for people of the 90s, video games, and music geeks. The whole movie is kind of a love letter for them and the fans of the original series. I just think the movie could have been a true great for everyone had it a little stronger writing. But at the same time...I can understand why it doesn't. Fans are going to be the biggest consumer of this movie, and people who are going to watch it just to geek out. The movie doesn't need a strong backing story for those people. And at two hours long already, to do what I wish it would have required the movie to either be split or be unbearably long.

So in short, anyone who is going to read this post in general, ANYONE on MP, will love this movie. If you aren't on MP...then you aren't reading this anyways.

I just saw this movie and I loved it~!

You basically covered all of the complaints I had with it, too. I mean, it was an awesome movie, but their relationship just seemed... I dunno, everything in it seemed really rushed (but as you say, you can only fit so much into one movie). I was also kind of disappointed that they didn't try to flesh out any of the other characters a little bit. I sort of expect/hoped that they'd do that with Kim, at least (I liked her in the comic, thought she was kind of interesting).

On the one hand I kind of like how they made the end of the movie different from the end of the comic (there were definitely some things in the comic I thought were kind of forced in a way), but on the other hand there were a few things that bothered me about it. I dunno, in someways I feel like you could get the perfect ending for the series if you just take the best from both and sort of mash it together cleverly. :P

Mostly, though I wish they had used subspace more. I mean, it may just be because it was more important in the comic's end, but it just feels like it might as well haven't been there with how little they touched upon it. At least, that's how I feel.

I won't be able to see it until tomorrow at the earliest. T_T

But I liked the comment in our newspaper about how watching the movie is like playing Pac-man for five days straight, even if he was saying it in a negative context. Something about it being a thrill that left you empty at the end. He also said the same thing about Knives being "more endearing" than the "deadpan" portrayal of Ramona. Buuut I'm going to be watching it with that fan mentality that Monkey mentioned, so whatevs.

I like Kim better than Ramona, and it sounds like the movie is only going to reinforce that.
