I believe it did in fact do this in R/B/Y (Which probably means G/S/C too) if you both play Switch.Why would that be illegal? It's not like they say when you're going to switch to [pokemon's name]. That's... just ridiculous.

Just because this topic caught my eye.
Diamond:
Empoleon->Pengina-> Pengin is japanese for penguin but since my Empoleon is female I put an A at the end.
Typholosion-> Kazuma -> Kazuma is a character from the show called S-Cry-Ed Kazuma was usually hot headed so that's how I came up with the nick name.
Gengar->Clyde-> Bonnie and Clyde were two well known criminals from the past so I caugh a male and female haunter in the turnback cave and named them bonnie and clyde.
Drapion->Grimmjow-> It's description said something about crushing cars and it just reminded me of Grimmjow from bleach
I know there's more but that's my main thing
