I just signed up for the army. As special forces.
I'd go to the last 6 weeks of basic training in georgia (instead of the full 10), do 6 more weeks there for airborne school, then like 4 more weeks there for infantry training (their AIT). Then I go to a special forces unit for a while and train with them- which is, they get me prepared for special forces training. If I don't make it through special forces training (I quit or I don't make the selection at the end), I revert to being airborne infantry.
If I do make it, I get some special designation/field in the special forces (medical, explosives, comms, etc) and then go through that particular specialized training. And hopefully get to do some exciting stuff in exciting places. Hopefully not too dangerous as well, but who am I kidding, it's the Special Forces after all.
If I don't make it, I won't be infantry for long because I'll be able to use my degree to get me into ocs and become an officer of some branch in the military (medical, infantry, comms, etc.).
My other choice was Military intelligence, Signal interpretations or whatever. would learn another language (well, i have to do that for SF as well) and work with homeland security and all that to monitor transmissions and stuff like that. Would've gotten a top secret clearance. More of a test of the mind, where SF is definitely a test of both.
There was a bigger bonus for MI, but as for me and my family, money is not an issue. So, I chose which one I thought would fit me the best. And either contract was 5 years, since the training for either of them is over a year long anyhow.
So... I've got to work on running and aerobic fitness like a demon till my shipping date in June. Fuck I hate running just to run. And I've got more power than endurance, so i got my work ahead of me to reverse that.

BUT!
Only if they are there to be part of the service. If you want the armed forces to be part of your career, that's great. We need to have full time officers. If you want to commit yourself and get a field that branches off from the service, that's great, too. Not everyone can be in the field or shooting the enemy, so it's good to see people branching out with their experience and service.
But if you're that person who is enlisting as a grunt just so the government will pay for community college, or your health care, or avoiding work, or something else, bad person! People who sign up, serve three years, then leave and have nothing to do with it again creates and inexperienced military.
Not "conspiracies". Conspiracy. Singular.

And I'm not even having them pay for my classes this semester, though I should. As far as money goes, my parents have plenty. I'm mostly looking for direction to my life. As they say, the army's a good place for people like me who don't know what they want to do with their lives. It exposes 'em to a lot and they can look at something and say they want to do it. Anyways, my contract's a minimun of 5 years, so five years in service I will be. What I was signed up for before as a medic was 6 years with the guard, 4 in the guard and 2 in inactive ready reserve (don't have to drill or anything, but still able to be called up at any time during that period).
So yeah, since I don't like the civilian options I know of (doc, laywer, etc.) I'm still looking for something i'll like.
I'm proud of my physical abilities as much as I am of my mental faculties, but thinking at that level takes effort that has so far been mostly unrewarded and it just feels good to be in shape and capable of a lot of physical activity. So, special forces was my choice. So, the army is my choice till I find something that suits me better. Working behind a desk isn't my ideal situation, but that's mostly what is to be had in these here modern times. Sad.

You should look at that more closely, unless they've changed procedure since June you have to serve eight years in all branches, though it's usually something like four active, four inactive. I almost signed a contract like yours which would have been five years active, three inactive, and I thought about doing the two active, four reserve, and two inactive. Point is, eight years after you sign that contract, you still belong to Uncle Sam. Though honestly I'd rather be signed on my own than drafted if it came to that.
