What have you nicknamed- or plan on nicknaming- your pokemon, and do they have any particular significance?



MGS
Onix- Solid Snake
Gyarados- Liquid Snake
Dratini/Dragonair- Big Boss/Naked Snake

Daikaiju (giant monsters)
Feraligatr- Godzilla
Torkoal- Gamera
Venusaur- Biolante, plant-monster opponent of godzilla's... and strikingly similar. 0.o
Moltres- Rodan

WoT
Zoroark- Matrim, the lucky trickster whose symbol is the fox
Mewtwo- Al' Thor, the dragon reborn himself, the most powerful wielder of the One Power
Wolf pokemon- (if they make one >.>) Perrin, the 'wolf king'
Gengar- Ishamael, Betrayer of Hope, strongest of the Forsaken and rivaling the Dragon himself.

Machamp- Atlas, greek god who held the world on his shoulders- or Brutus
Articuno- Blizzaga, FF series ice attack.
Torterra- Atlas, referring to the world map, or the earth itself
Moltres- Sol, for sun of course.
Zapdos- T-bird, the thunderbird of native legend, and the mascot for my high school

I seldom nickname my in-game pokemon, but I usually nickname my competitive teams (also one team I used in Red; can't remember those names though...)

Gyarados - Manasa (snake goddess, Hindu I think)

Kangaskhan - Slappy (an unlikely super hero from Whose Line; also sounds like Scrappy, it's ability)

Kingdra - Bubbles (same one from the previous team)

The last time I played pokemon, I named most of them after diseases. Shingles was my favorite.

I name every single Pokemon in the game, usually just by mixing letters together. But some of the ones you've probably all seen before:

I usually name my Pokemon after famous philosophers or political theorists (i.e., Dostoevsky, Ayn Rand, Machiavelli..). It gets a bit tricky trying to maintain the integrity of the name if it's too long. For my HeartGold playthrough, I'm naming each Pokemon after it's Japanese equivalent, just because I watch the subs so much that I recognize the Japanese names quicker than I recognize the English names.

I find this amusing because it's actually illegal in official Nintendo tournaments.


I used to never nickname my Pokemon until probably starting with Diamond and Pearl. I like to use Greek/Roman gods and and heroes, though sometimes I'll name them after people/locations that fit them.

Fire Starter - Vulcan - Roman god of Fire and Blacksmiths

Breloom - Muhammad - Muhammad Ali the Boxer

Tentacruel - Nautilus - The Submarine from Twenty Thousands Leagues Under the Sea

Typhlosion - Vesuvius - Famous Volcano

Scizor - Knight/Galahad - Son of Lancelot

Those are some of the ones I use consistently as I usually make them up on the spot. Right now my HeartGold team has:
Quilava- Vesuvius
Flaaffy - Fulgora - Roman Goddess of Lightning
Zubat (Mother) - Luna - Greek Moon Goddess
Zubat (Daughter with Hypnosis) - Tiamat - After a Bat Boss from Darksiders. I watched my roommate play it for a week.
Scizor - Archer - She's a she so I didn't do Galahad and it just sounds like a generic female medieval name
Sudowoodo - Not Caught or Named yet - Open to Suggestions
Horsea - Not Caught but Poseidon - Greek God of the Ocean

Why would that be illegal? It's not like they say when you're going to switch to [pokemon's name]. That's... just ridiculous.

And somehow, I forgot to put...

Blastoise- Maelstrom, as in a temestuous storm, or deadly oceanic whirlpools, like the one that ends up gobbling up the nautilus at the end of 20k leagues under the sea.

Swello- Capistrano, the place swallows migrate to.

I said for Nintendo tournaments it's illegal. I'm 100% that the tournament you went to at the mall wasn't the Nintendo World Championship so they are allowed to do whatever they want. You also can't give them vulgar or offensive names and as Stars said name them all the same thing. Nintendo just doesn't want people doing it, even if you can easily look at the Mankey and know it's not a Growlithe.

But after playing for so many generations, the regular pokemon names get old and besides, I like to keep easy tabs on which one out of perhaps several of the same species in a pc box I'm raising.
