Google Wave was invented to show young people how old people feel when using a computer.

Seriously, what do I do with it? What makes it different from any IM program?

Edit: Okay, I know you can embed it in other web stuff and it's more point-and-click friendly, but as far as using it through wave.google.com, what's different?

It's really just because it's in beta. It's more of a collaboration type of thing than a social network, and it's certainly more email than instant messaging. The ability to edit everything and see when someone is typing while they're typing it are considerably different. It makes a lot more sense when you use it more, but at this point, with so few bots and people on it, it's kind of useless.

I have huge doubts it'll ever replace email, but I can see the use for it, I just have no use for that use at the moment. (I actually did the other day, but didn't realize I did until afterwards, ha.)

Two ways..

This is their intro video form I/O

It's really a combination of IM and Email..
The reason its different?
First off.. The way they have it hosted.. Each letter is transmitted as it's typed. So Active collaboration is passable.
If this was on wave.. You could have replayed with " Shut up, ya duffer." As I typed the previous sentence... Or at any point throughout my typing.
Next there are a slew of bots.. A spell checking bot, that actively searches the text. It can differentiate between synonyms and can correct spelling through information.
They have a picture feature that allows you to drag and drop pictures into the wave. This also allows you to collaborate..

If you right click on someone in the wave, and his private// You can send a wave to some people with out others see it.

Because these changes are actively updated, you are able to rewind the progress of the wave.. Seeing when things where added.

There also be a litany of "editing features" .. Like hi-lighting and polled changes.

The most important part, you can't do anything with no one on your wave list. You need someone to wave with.

But watch the video..> It's worth the time.. It's actually pretty cool.

I think it's a mistake to discontinue it so soon, it's barely had time to adopt. I mean, look at Twitter, that crap took what, four or five years to catch on.

That said, a while after Wave came out, I thought something like this might happen. It seemed like an extreme demo of many different, barely related bits of code that had really awesome capabilities, but had no purpose on their own. I'm excited to see some of this stuff come to Google Talk, like the drag and drop file sharing (Or maybe that's already in there... haven't tried sending anything lately) and the message preview.

Perhaps, in some number of years, if the open source community takes on the Wave code, they can refine it, and make it something to rival IRC.

Oh yeah, by the way, Apache has taken over Google Wave, now calling it Apache Wave, and it's completely open to being downloaded on your own servers. I guess Wave was supposed to be used like that from the beginning, but I never got that impression. Still, using one's own private Wave server on a corporate intranet may be a very interesting solution...
