I've had this idea rattling around my head every since I played Deus Ex and Helios hacks the news boards in France to tell you that he's after you.

Am I the only person here is who cyberpunk enough to spend hours sifting through their spam mail trying to decypher patterns that might suggest that it's actually some form of computer language?

Yeah, it actually sends millions of emails and varies them each time, trying through trial and error to communicate some message to humans. Waiting for someone to respond to it appropriately. The AI itself would be a botnet using viruses and trojans to expand it's understanding of people. Just imagine how intriguing the concept of a person would be if your existence was entirely online and you'd never experienced the real world.

If you follow the links in proper spam they don't really take you anywhere but in weird circles of generated text and pages usually with a lot of spyware and malware. I haven't actually had a look around this part of the internet in ages, but now I'm on Linux I might take another look now I can be less paranoid about getting nasty viruses.

I've read through spam before, but only to find funny ones. However, spam is certainly computer generated. Many spam engines try to abuse keywords and look like real text to attempt to make it through the filters. So I don't think it is an AI per se, but most likely utilizes a neural network.

Oooh! I listened to a very insightful interview with an interesting chap called Paco Xander Nathan talking about the artificial intelligence work he'd done for personalized advertising. It was fascinating and pretty much confirmed everything I suspected. There are links somewhere on the INTERNET!
