I personally enjoyed the cinematography, while I felt that Blaire Witch was kind of dumb and fairly boring, the use of the camera in Cloverfield added to the suspense and believability of the movie's scenario. I enjoyed how even at the end, you still don't know what the creature is, whether it's alive or dead, where it came from, or why? The ambiguity of the whole horror aspect in the movie is something I haven't seen in any other movie within the genera in the last 30 years. Plus, there will always be a place in my heart for giant lumbering hell-beasts.

Ultimately, for me the movie wasn't about the monster, it wasn't about the douche-bag bros and their respective hos getting the ever loving piss psychologically molested out of them, it was more about the overall experience. The movie was just the right length and provided just the right amount of action, horror, and suspense to effectively make a good movie in my mind. Movies today depend too much on trying to be over the top, and kind of miss the point. This one stuck true to its purpose and delivered what it promised.

did you watch any of the interviews with the director? he was talking about how he was trying to portray the monster as an infant left on earth and it was looking for its mother. i saw that portrayed in the movie not at all.

You forgot to put cinematography in quotes to make it seem sarcastic.

I don't understand the issue with the cinematography. It wasn't filmed with a cheap camcorder. All the scenes were scripted and filmed within a studio and later edited. And to further point out, whats wrong with the fact that the director's origional intent of the movie was unseen? In what ways does that detract from the movie itself?

because the director has a grand idea of what he's trying to convey, but theres no indication of it whatsoever in the film. sure it could be a lumbering infant abandoned on earth and looking for its mother, but it could just as equally be terrorists/the day after tomorrow/gary busey. it only detracts from the movie after i learned the original intent. i watched it with my old roomate and neither of us could figure how that was supposed to come across. the whole thing about godzilla movies that make them so great, is that godzilla is never just godzilla, she's a metaphor of some kind. my issue with the cinematography is my own, i got motion sickness, and had to sit really far back from the screen.

Well yeah, there really wasn't much a meaning or metaphor to Cloverfield, at least none that came across in the film. The classic 1950's Godzilla movie was a masterpiece in ever sense, symbolizing the evils of unchecked technological advancement and human endeavour. There was nothing like that in Cloverfield, and even with the directors intent for the monster, there really was no meaning to that either. But to be fair, there is really no way that could have come across given the way the movie was presented. I suppose the message is "don't be a douche-bag, because a giant monster might come along and totaly fuck up your life."
