this is a slideshow of incredibly dumb science things. how does any of this matter? and what the hell is it doing being funded, when there are so many actually really important things that need sciencing?

Actually all of this research is incredibly important, and if you'd take a little time to try to understand it (I promise you won't without years of research, but you can at least have a cursory understanding) you'd realize that this research can and eventually will lead to free (or very cheap) energy, teleportation, matter-energy conversion, and loads of other very important finds. These things are being funded because they will, given time, produce a much better human race, free of the problems seen today.

This is not the greatest signature in the world. No, this is just a tribute...

Couldn't remember the greatest signature in the world. Yeeaaah, NO! This is a tribuuute! Ohhhhh. To the greatest signature in the world! All right! It was the greatest signature in the world all right.

And the peculiar thing is this, my friends. The signature I made on that fateful night didn't actually look anything like this signature! This is just a tribute. You've gotta believe me, and I wish you were there. Just a matter of opinion. Seriously dude, I've read a lot about dumb experiments claiming to be "science," but none of the experiments here seem to be all that... dumb. I'm so confused. What are you trying to say? The results have no immediate application, and therefore science r teh stupids?

Heck, entry #4 there described a perfect reason for why such science rightfully exists:

Nuclear fusion - the melding of atomic nuclei that happens inside stars - is a long-sought goal on Earth. If scientists can achieve it, it could offer a powerful source of energy with few negative environmental consequences.

Not all scientific research endeavor can be trying to "cure cancer." And even the ones that do start off at this level. You can't just say, "I'm going to build a rocket!" You have to design each small part; the engine, the fins, oxygen supply, command terminal, everything! These things are very important because they are the pieces that create something bigger.

Oh, and because it's learning. Will knowing the capital of your state ever earn you money, save your life, or alter the course of history? Noooooo, but you should still know! KNOWLEDGE!

specifically that one about bending light into pretty shapes, and that one about matter being in rings. What ever happened to big idea science? "super" science? hooray for quark gluon soup. it's too hot to eat, and it doesn't have chicken and noodles in it.

ok, so hooray for science, they know how to bend light and how to make protons and neutrons at 7 TRILLION degrees. great job science! +1 Gold Trophy.

Excuse me, but I'm sure Star Trek has both mentioned and used that knowledge for science. And isn't Star Trek the future we're all aiming for?

I can't help but feel that the Original Poster misunderstands that the idea of science is to understand the universe around us, not to design more expensive iPhones.

you can understand things all you want, but that doesnt mean you can use any of it... ie magnets, giraffes, rainbows...

what does all that mean to someone who isnt a scientist? great that they understand it, but what does it solve?

Nothing but so what?

Does it matter that knowing how a rainbow works doesn't produce something capitalistic.

Knowing how the Sun works doesn't mean we can make money from it.

The breeding habits of a bird in the tropics won't make anyone money.

It's a field of knowledge that doesn't have to produce something for everyone. Most people can't enjoy the nuances of someone in the field of History, English, Geology, Philosophy, etc. There is no knowledge that is universally helpful.

Knowing how the Sun works doesn't mean we can make money from it.

That's a lie. I mean solar energy exists, doesn't it? Plus I know people are trying to use how the sun works to be a renewable source of energy, aside from just solar energy. It also helps understanding how it works to figure out weather patterns, and I'm sure you can make money off of that.

If you look at every small little think in Science, yes, some research may seems ridiculous. But small things build up to our understanding of our surroundings, and our ability to future our technology. Just because it may seems useless to you, it doesn't mean it is, and it doesn't mean it won't lead to a significant discovery that will further better all our lives.

None of us are scientists, and I doubt any of us fully understand the purpose for these experiments, so it's pointless to complain about it since you really don't know.

what does all that mean to someone who isnt a scientist? great that they understand it, but what does it solve?

I'm not a computer programmer, but I sure am glad there are people who are.

I'm not a musician, but I'm glad they exist.

I'm not a construction worker, but I appreciate the work they do.

I could never in a million years be a doctor, but I am sure fucking glad there are people who are.

Just because the general public isn't something, doesn't mean that they will never benefit from it.
