this right here. but what should i use as a medium? im up for trying whatever, but i dont want to spend a bunch of money on supplies, finish it, and be all like "wow, i shouldnt have done this with crayola markers on canvas"

ordinary paper can suffice, with colored pencils or possibly markers, but colored pencils won't bleed, so they might be easier to use.
