Okay, ladies and gentlemen, about a year ago, I posted a topic here about rom hacking, specifically the hacking of Super Mario Word. The responses that I got were lukewarm at best. Anyway, I would once again like to submit to your approval the following, but first! A disclaimer.

Owning a rom of a game that you do not own the official copy of is illegal. The selling and or distributing of said rom is also illegal. However, hacking a rom, regardless of ownership IS legal. but the distribution in any way shape and form of said hacked rom is illegal. This is countered by the distribution of the hacks data, or IPS. Distributing the IPS is completely legal, as is applying the IPS to a rom, macking it into your own, entirely legal, hacked rom.

Now that I have said that, I can safely say that I am not encouraging any sort of illegal activity. Now onto the nitty gritty.

There exists a free program online called Lunar Magic, which can be downloaded here. This program allows one to hack and edit a rom of Super Mario world, allowing for not only tweaking of the preexisting data, but also allowing one to import new data, new sprites, and new soundtracks, as well as the editing of virtually every aspect of the game. Its a fun and neat little program I have been tooling around with for quite sometime. Now, why do I bring this up? I dunno. I think it would be something fun to do. We could even make a community wide version of Super Mario World.

So what do you guys think? Interested any? I'm more than willing to help out. Questions, comments, and concerns can be directed to me via e-mail or facebook.

ALSO, this should be noted. For lunar magic to work, you need a clean SMW rom. What I mean by clean, is that the rom should not have been previously played and should not have any data presaved to it. You will also need a program to rip the IPS off of your hacked rom, or to apply a new IPS to a clean rom, for distribution purposes. This program can be found here.

lol, we can post all the ROMs we want. Especially here. But even if it were somewhere else, Ninty wouldn't even care unless the hack was making money or something.

Hm, interesting. But before I post anything, not that I don't believe you, I'd just feel more comfortable with a second opinion. I've got a neat little demo I'd like to show you guys.

Well Hyperlisk is an admin.

And I am the owner, and I don't care unless Nintendo or someone tells me to stop it. So do it.

Try this out.

Its a little rough around the edges, but I think the actually level design is pretty good. 2 1/2 worlds are completed, and you have full access to the levels that are done.

Just thought I'd chime in, regardless of whether or not you own the cartridge, having a ROM for any reason, however you got it, is completely illegal. However, what you have on your own computer, that you don't distribute, is your own business.

Haha, could you create characters/enemies based on us, each with unique movement patterns, attacks, weaknesses and stuff. I think that'd be a pretty awesome thing to do. Lol, sounds like you could replace the bosses in each castle with one of us. xD

As a side note, Sonic the Hedgehog hacks can be pretty awesome. The most notable of which is Sonic 1 Megamix (you will need to set up your emulator to work with Sega CD roms).

That would be awesome, and is entirely do able with the tools that lunar magic, and a few other programs offer. However, that kind of programming isn't visually based and requires the use of .txt based hexidecimal coding, something I have little to no knowledge of. I'm also not very good at creating sprites (I don't seem capable of grasping the concept of sprite based shading.) But there is alot that can be done, and I was kind of hoping to make this a community based, community driven project.

But here is an example of what can be done.

Perhaps you could draw reference sheets for the characters, and get in touch with ol' Swiftman to make some sprites. He's actually pretty good at it.

I dunno, I love ideas and input, and if anybody wants to actually help in the the designing, building, and programming, that would be beyond fantastic. But as of this point, ideas and suggestions would be great.

So, who wants worlds? Looking for 9 potential worlds, with themes, world 7 typically being the final world, world 8 being star road, and world 9 being the bonus area, but I'm flexable and so is lunar magic. Who wants to work on them? Who wants one based on them? And what kind of theme do you want?

World 1:
World 2:
World 3:
World 4:
World 5:
World 6:
World 7:
World 8:
World 9:

The final boss of the game should obviously be Monkeydog, but it should be apparent that all of the other bosses are in it for themselves and hold no fear of Monkeydog what-so-ever. I also call dibs on being the boss of World 1: Suitsville. I don't know how this will be accomplished, but I have faith.

SMW Central Tutorials

This link provides lists of tons of tutorials in how to use the coding system used in Super Mario World. You'll want to look for anything concerning ASM and Hex.

And as far as multiple characters go, I have no Idea how to do that, but I'm sure its possible, I've seen alot of amaizing things done to SMW.

I'd be willing to help work on designs and stuff. Although I probably should read up on it all first, when I get the time, but I seriously will help if the project gets off the ground.
