sudo apt-get install <name of application>
or if you're unsure of the name of package you're looking for:
sudo apt-cache search <partial name of the application>
If you ever have permissions trouble and don't have the inclination to learn about the chmod & chown commands just remember to "sudo" before the command you wish to issue.
Since learning terminal commands I feel a step closer to being in Star Trek and having a computer I talked to rather than being chained to clumsy visual metaphors.
As a side note, when I first started using computers (around 1991) I mostly just used DOS so terminal never really intimidated me. I would have figured your experience was similar, VP.

My complaint wasn't specifically about the terminal, it was more about linux making it unnecessarily difficult for me to edit a read-only file. I did eventually get it to open with gedit just fine, only to discover that all of the tutorials i had found were just out of date enough to be useless. Sigh.

I remember having weird file sharing problems with Linux Mint. Wish I could remember how I resolved them in the end. I assume you've installed samba? In my experience Ubuntu is much better equipped to file share across platforms than Linux Mint, though I don't know why that is./>Linux mint with xfce, and no, not yet. haven't tried for a few days, though. I should get on that.
Let me know if you need any help.
