Would it be a good idea to create a new forum for news threads? This may help distinguish more personal discussion and stop discussion of world events from clogging up the general discussion forum.
Just a thought.

We used to have a "Serious Discussion" forum, but it got melded in to the general discussion forum. I suppose it couldn't hurt to start it up again.

Thanks, but for some reason threads from the new forum do not appear in my RSS feed.

Perhaps we should experiment with decentralization of power?? :P It is the news forum after all. Don't want another goskomizdat.
We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further!

Dropping down a well that time forgot
With scars that show that we care a lot
In the sky we dreamt like a juggernaut
Of the things we'd do and what we saught

Yeah, I'm thinking it has run its course. Would anybody want an actual "news" forum? Which is what Bean asked for originally, but it turned in to something else. Maybe all controversial topics should go in spam or somewhere unmoderated. Blah.

Wouldn't mind it being a News forum instead. It being a subforum under General's led to some problems on my end, too. Namely that the mobile version of the site doesn't like listing subforums as things that exist unless I view it as the full webpage (which drains battery life like whoa).

Alright, so I've separated the forums for great justice. I'm also trying to come up with a way to... lessen the tensions. I am going to share my current idea, but if anybody else has a suggestion, I'm all ears.
I think it might be a good idea to require a sort of topic-title tagging. For instance, the topic "The Government Shutdown" could become something like, "[News]The Government Shutdown." Or "Healthcare," could become "[Opinion]Healthcare," (or whatever tag could be more fitting, I don't know). We could include a couple others if we can think of some that make sense, but I don't see any need to make it too complicated. I'm suggesting this because my hope is that by showing our intent when creating a topic, we can hopefully keep it more focused while allowing for heated debates. Maybe a [Controversial] tag for anything that might get heated, which can help anyone who isn't interested in arguments avoid the topic all together (and if people wanted, topics like that could avoid being moderated if everybody involved knows what they're getting in to).
