I have recently been thinking about developing games for Android. This seems to be the wave of the future, does it not? I was thinking of starting with something very simple. Just wondering if anyone here has ever looked into it. Maybe this fad has come and gone already, and everyone has moved on to something way more hip, like R2K12 or something.

Old flash signature has been revived for nostalgic purposes. Too bad RpgWizard hasn't been revived. :\

My brother makes games for Android. He wanted me to work on a balloon game with him, but I haven't got round to sitting down with Java yet.

Your brother always out-shone me. You were always the creative one, Bean. I'll do the JAVA. You do the creativity bit. Cmon, I'm bored. Let's finally live up to our potential. :)

Sure, if you'll do the JAVA I'm in.

We should make an RPG trading game where your party indirectly influences the outcome of a three-way war by taking quests to transport crucial supplies from strategic locations. That's the current manifestation of the same game idea I had when I first joined RPGWizard. The idea just won't die.

I had an idea for a game kind of like that, except it was like...I forget the name. But it involved using the GPS to interact with people in your general area and divide lines or whatever. It was mainly an economy simulator.

Yes, an economy simulator is exactly what I'm thinking. On one level there'd be three AI's effectively playing a very simple RTS with each other. And that generates quests to either intercept or escort supplies.

I'm not sure how I feel about GPS stuff. It has a lot of potential, but I have no idea how you'd implement in a meaningful way that scales to the amount of players you have in your local area.

You know what's scary? I've had 2 ideas that revolve around both of those premises.

One also involves a three sided war. My basic app was going to be a variation of rock, paper, scissors. The premise was on an ice planet and the three sides were metal, ice, and fire. Metal tools shatter ice. Ice extinguishes fire. Fire melts metal.

The second involved global domination involving GPS. You could go to certain areas IRL and claim them for your overall faction, and your smaller guild.

We all think so alike.

Well the only reason why I bring up GPS into my game thoughts was because why even make that kind of game a phone game? At least the GPS gimmick would give it more reason to be an app.

Although I understand your point.

GPS aside, there's alot of simple, fun, highly addictive phone games, that focus on fun and gameplay, instead of graphics and voice acting.

I like your idea Bean. I def need to brush up on my JAVA. I may actually have a long enough attention span to complete a project now. ... I guarantee nothing.

Yeah, I really like how minimalistic phone games are, they're stripped right down to their core gameplay mechanics with no fluff and cutesy graphics to hold it all together. Plus I think you could do really intuitive interfaces with the touchscreen, which helps as RPG games often involve navigating through inventory screens and character sheets etc.

Awesome. I've been thinking a good project to help me learn PHP would be to code a prototype of the game with just a text interface to see how the gameplay I have in my head actually plays.

... I gaurantee nothing also.

I have had this same idea. With a dynamically generated world/cities based on city data from Google maps.

Yes it would be like geo-caching your way to world domination. The control points could be like the top of the empire state building, or the mcdonalds on main st. The mcdonalds would pay, of course, to be a control point. Whatever faction has more people at a point controls it, and whoever controls more points in a city, state, country, continent, controls that whole region. We are geniuses. I'm surprised we're all not high paid game executives.

Unless you've got a really effective marketting plan, I'd recommend waiting on the GPS idea. You might want to use one of your other concepts, and when that game succeeds, more people will be likely to buy the GPS game - which would benefit greatly from the increased number of players - due to name recognition.

Excellent point Stars. In reality, I'm not looking to make money off anything, or even make a game that anyone outside this forum plays. I plan on starting very small. Bean's idea is def more my speed. It's been a while since I've done coding of any kind.

I am surprised that a GPS game like that hasn't been developed yet tho, since it seems many have had the same idea.

I'm in the process of learning LibGDX, a framework for developing Java/Android/HTML5 games.

It's much easier than learning the Android SDK, but the documentation is a bit scattered. Still, it can do some wonderful things.

Hal is a game I helped develop in 48 hours. Specifically I did some work with sprite rendering and designed a reusable messagebox system.

I'm currently in the process of developing a small multiplayer sidescrolling RPG/platformer mashup, with the eventual goal of porting my 2k3 project to Android. It's a lot of fun! If you have some experience with Java programming, I'd say give it a go.

Hal looks like Simon/The Ice King from Adventure Time.

I think I'll download and play it though.

Wow DHM. You are alot more advanced than I am. I just bought a book on the Android SDK, but my Java skills are crude at best. Be sure to post any other projects you are working on. I'll definitely have to try out Hal.
